User Experience Researcher - Augmented Reality Interactions

Building delightful new interactions is a crucial part of our mission of creating the future of VR and AR technology. As a User Researcher in the AR Interaction team at Facebook Reality Labs in Redmond WA, you'll be tackling the most exciting challenges of informing the new interaction methods for future augmented reality devices. Join a world-class team experimenting with bold ideas in areas including optics, haptics, tracking, displays, computer vision, user experience, audio, and perceptual psychology. Work alongside expert designers, prototypers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and software engineers to create the technology that makes AR pervasive and universal. You are passionate about informing the hardware decisions towards yet-to-be-invented products with the user research insights, you know when to jump in before your stakeholders ask, you have passion in perfecting the interactions through methodical and iterative evaluations. You are curious and passionate about new ways to interact with emerging technologies, and full of new ideas to collect and analyze human experiences of these emerging technologies to inform AR/VR interactions. You must be willing to learn new methods and explore creative solutions to ambiguous problems. Your toolbox should consist of strong quantitative methods with good knowledge of qualitative methods.


  • Plan and execute research that collects and analyzes objective and subjective measures of hardware experiences to inform the direction of AR/MR/VR interactions and strategies
  • Work with research scientists, designers, engineers and PMs to identify research questions that can yield actionable insights for the team
  • Develop standardized UX metrics and surveys as appropriate for repeated use and comparison over time for various projects across the broader team
  • Proactively involve various team members in the research process
  • Share best practices & new techniques with the broader organization
  • PhD in Computer Science, HCI, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or any other quantitative field of engineering and science
  • 3+ years experience conducting applied research on consumer products involving quantitative measures in industry
  • 3+ years experience owning the end-to-end research process of planning, recruiting, executing/facilitating, analyzing, and reporting the insights
  • 3+ years for experience with a variety of quantitative research methods (A/B test, usability test, JND test, Fitts' law, RITE methods, task analysis, etc.)
  • Experience with user-centered design methods
  • Experience in leading hardware UX research throughout the entire product development life cycle
  • Experience in wearable device research especially with head-worn wearables
  • Track record of informing new interaction hardware in an industry setting with experience in working with multiple input modalities
  • Strong communication skills with experience in tailoring messages to various stakeholders
  • Comfortable working on ambiguous future-facing interaction research projects
  • Ability to build cross-functional relationships
  • Thrive in an interdisciplinary, dynamic, fast-paced team
  • Prototyping experience
