Software Engineer, Portal Calling

The Portal team is building products that make it easier for people to connect with the ones they love most. We are a team of world-class experts developing and shipping products at the intersection of hardware, software and content. We have a clear mandate to ship products at scale. The Calling team is at the core of Portal software. We work on delivering the best calling experience with a goal to make video calls feel like "being there together". We work on bringing Facebook's Core Calling platforms, used by billions of users every day, to Portal. Calling team is responsible for building scalable calling architecture that serves as a foundation to build truly social in-call experiences.
A successful candidate in this role is self-driven, passionate and doesn't mind delving into different areas of the stack. The person should be willing to take initiative and execute consistently in an agile, fast-paced environment. Strong communications and interpersonal skills are key given that we work with many internal and external engineering teams, partners, designers, architects, product and program managers.


  • Design, develop, and test core calling framework that can scale to multiple hardwares and platforms.
  • Work closely with our product, design and messaging teams to build modular frameworks and extensible interfaces.
  • Work across Camera, Audio, AI/AR, Messenger, and related teams to optimize for the best calling experience.
  • Work with other teams to debug functional, performance, and stability issues across the stack.
  • Participate in design reviews and code reviews for the team.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent software development experience
  • Experience in WebRTC or video calling application
  • 3+ years of experience in coding in Java and/or C++
  • 2+ years experience with Android development
  • Knowledge of VoIP or other telephony and chat protocols (XMPP)
  • Experience with RTC technologies: audio, video, signaling and real-time networking
  • Experience working with Android frameworks (Telephony, Camera2, Multimedia, OpenGL etc.)
  • Good understanding of mobile performance, latency, and security issues
  • Hands-on knowledge of HTTP2, WebSockets, etc.
  • Experience with shipping consumer products
