Security Engineering Intern, Threat Research

Facebook’s Threat Infrastructure team is seeking a security engineer intern to help keep our billion users safe from real world threats. You will build large, distributed security solutions that allow security teams from around the world to share data about real world threats via Facebook’s platforms. We are looking for a candidate with a passion for security and innovation, who will research and develop new solutions to protect our users but also help us share the goodness to make the internet a safer place for all.

Responsibilities

  • Design core, backend software components to address threats to Facebook through empirical research
  • Code using primarily PHP, Python, SQL, and R
  • Implement abuse detection systems to surface threats
  • Interface with other teams to incorporate their innovations and vice versa
  • Take a leadership role in driving internal security and privacy initiatives
  • Conduct design and code reviews
  • Analyze and interpret the results of security experiments
  • Answer attack and threat related questions by using appropriate statistical techniques
  • Produce work publishable in top security research venues

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S., or PhD candidate in Computer Science or related field graduating in December 2017 or later
  • Enthusiasm for the constant fight to ensure security and privacy on the internet
  • Experience developing and debugging in PHP, SQL, and Python
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis concepts, tools and languages (e.g. R, matlab)
  • Contributions to the security community are a huge plus (public research, blogging, presentations, etc)
  • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data
  • Comfortable analyzing complex, high volume, high dimensionality data from varying sources
  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner
  • Interest or experience working with large data sets, experience working with distributed computing tools a plus (Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, etc)
