Opto-Mechanical Engineer

As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer at Oculus Research, (Facebook Reality Labs or FRL) you will help develop state of the art solutions, mechanisms, and prototypes for next generation near to eye display (NED) consumer products that will create transformative user experiences. You will become part of a team exploring new technical solutions through initial concept development, prototype design, analytical modeling, and fast iterative prototyping. The position will first support multiple teams in the research and development environment to firmly establish the technology and then later carry the designs through into a pre-production readiness level with the product development team. We want people who work well in cross-functional teams; can brainstorm big ideas, work in unexplored technology areas, are able to drive a concept into working prototypes and can later transition into high-volume consumer products. Starting with a sound mechanical engineering background, be willing to become a quick expert in a new area by quickly build new prototypes using novel materials and/or by integrating structures in new ways.


  • Design, build, and test custom characterization/metrology lab equipment and low volume manufacturing equipment
  • Design optical and assembly fixturing and tooling
  • Design and ownership of electro-mechanical mechanisms, including design, build and system testing and tuning
  • Working with Electrical Engineers in physical electrical systems layout definition including defining compact circuit boards, flex circuits, wire routing and connectorization
  • Polymer materials and membrane mechanical testing & test tooling
  • Miniature actuator selection and precision mechanism design
  • Development of basic manufacturing process & finding and building relationships with specialists' vendors
  • Designing prototype products for internal use
  • Development of manufacturing process for fabrication and assembly
  • Integration of optical components, sensors, and actuators into prototype products
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineer role, with system or product ownership
  • Experience with optical component packaging and testing
  • Experience with CAD
  • Experience with FEA modeling, and static and dynamic analysis of mechanical component performance
  • Experience designing, building, and testing prototypes
  • Experience in system integration
  • Experience in electromechanical Systems
  • Experience with precision mechanism design
  • Experience in consumer product mechanical design
  • DFM experience
  • Experience in establishing manufacturing processes
  • Experience designing for human interaction & basic industrial design
  • Experience with control systems, LABVIEW or MATLAB
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Experience in mechatronics design
  • Understanding of optics fundamentals
