Optical Scientist, Nanofabrication Patterning

We currently seeking an innovative researcher with expertise in patterning technology for novel near-eye display technology. The researcher will interface directly with our team of Optical Design staff and Nanofabrication research staff. This is a full-time position requiring a PhD in physics, optics, material science, engineering, or similar. Candidates requires expertise in advanced lithographic tooling, materials and processes. Ideally, candidates will possess experience in fabricating novel optical elements. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team and have excellent interpersonal communication experience.


  • Act as the Research Staff tool owner
  • Develop process and materials in support of near-eye optical components
  • Develop operational protocols for efficient execution of experiments and provide guidance to engineering staff
  • Translate Optic Designs into digital fabrication designs
  • Work closely with the research and engineering staff to design and execute design of experiments
  • Work closely with the Optics team to understand design sensitivities and to establish appropriate metrology and characterization strategies
  • Build collaborative relationships both internally and externally to support research initiatives
  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, or similar fields with a focus on novel optic element characterization
  • Must be available to start employment on or after April 1, 2018
  • Experience with patterning technology techniques
  • Experience with nanofabrication techniques including deposition, etch, and lithography
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. beginning in 2018
  • Experience with optical component and structural characterization
  • Experience with electron beam lithography
  • In-lab experience in nanofabrication techniques such as Lithography (contact, soft, imprint, projection, etc.), Etch, Deposition, Wets
  • Experience in design generation
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading journals, workshops or conferences such as Applied Optics, Science, Nature, Nature Communications, APL, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Optics Letters, Optics Express, and relevant SIGGRAPH, SID, OSA, SPIE, EIPBN, or similar
