Mechanical Engineer, Data Center Strategic Engineering

Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design and operations of Critical Facilities to become part of our Data Center Strategic Engineering team. Our datacenters are the foundation upon which our software operates with efficient ease. Building and operating data centers the "right" way from the day they go live is synonymous with ensuring capacity availability and capital conservatism. The Facebook Data Center Strategic Engineering team endeavors to be the benchmark of innovation for the data center industry and to help other data center teams solve problems/challenges through innovative solutions. This position is full-time and located in our Menlo Park office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the team in the research and development of conceptual design of data center mechanical infrastructure for improved reliability, efficiency, speed to market and cost
  • Provide technical due diligence review and evaluation for the data center site selection process
  • Evaluation of new technologies and products
  • Lead pilot or proof of concept projects to evaluate benefits and feasibility of the solution for broader deployment
  • Cross-functional collaboration with other Facebook teams including Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Network Engineering and Capacity Engineering and Analysis
  • Develop strong industry relationships with other data center peers and organizations to maintain current on industry trends and future directions
  • Develop strategic partnership with key vendors to gain insight into new product development roadmaps
  • Provide mechanical mission critical system review services to the design team and local data center operations teams
  • Travel to data center sites for engineering studies, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning, as required
  • Participate in equipment failure and cooling system related Root-Cause-Analysis (RCA)
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Professional Engineer registration
  • 10+ years experience in data center design, construction, operations, maintenance
  • Knowledge of HVAC system, Chilled Water Systems, Condenser Water Systems, Pump controls, Glycol/Glycols, AHU units (DX, split, RTU, CRAC, etc.), CRAC, Raised Floor Systems, HOT/COLD aisle containment, Building Management System
  • Working knowledge of US industry standards, building codes and safety standards
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards used in Europe
  • Knowledge with construction process and cost estimating process
  • Cross-discipline knowledge of complete critical facility systems
  • Troubleshooting and analytical experience
  • Experience providing solutions to projects
  • Communications experience
  • Knowledge with AutoCAD or Revit, Visio, FLOTHERM or TileFlow
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • R&D experience with cooling system products
  • Large and complex system design experience, including campus systems
