Mechanical Engineer, Data Center Design Retrofits

Facebook is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design and construction of Critical Facilities to become part of our data center engineering team. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates. Building and operating reliable and efficient data centers is essential to support the growth of Facebook. The data center engineering team collaborates with all key stake-holders to ensure engineering and design of our data centers incorporate considerations from micro-levels (servers and IT equipment design requirements) to macro-levels (mechanical cooling and power distribution options) to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability of our compute infrastructure.

This position is full-time and located in our Fremont, CA office.

  • Collaborate with internal stake-holders to define project design criteria, develop Basis of Design, establish installation strategy, and lead internal technical scope reviews
  • Manage consultants to implement the project through schematic design, design development, to construction documents
  • Manage the design build contractor to ensure the project meet the business and technical needs defined in the BOD
  • Provide construction administrative support to the project manager during construction with tasks including, but not limited to, responding to RFI's, issuance of technical bulletins, review submittals and shop-drawings, and conducting source inspections at vendor factories
  • Review consultants' engineering calculations, run independent engineering and cost analysis
  • Research new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center HVAC equipment and related components
  • About 25% travel to domestic and international datacenter sites for engineering studies, mechanical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning, as needed
  • Provide instructions to design consultants, installation contractors, and validate quality of installed works
  • Take ownership and work to achieve the goal with good team spirit
  • Provide solutions to complex projects under pressure
  • Respond on an as-needed basis to emergencies
  • Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of five (5) years professional experience in building design and construction
  • Experience with HVAC systems, Chilled Water Systems, Condenser Water Systems, Pump controls, Glycool/Glycols, AHU units (DX, split, RTU, CRAC, etc.), CRAC, Raised Floor Systems, HOT/COLD aisle containment and Building Management Systems
  • Experience with industry standards, building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, UMC and LEED
  • Experience trouble shooting and providing solutions to projects
  • Experience with the construction and cost estimating process
  • Experience with retrofits in operational facilities
  • Experience with cross-discipline critical facility systems
  • Experience with AutoCAD or Revit, Visio, and Bluebeam
  • Mechanical Professional Engineer registration is preferred
  • Data center or mission critical design, construction and operations
  • Experience with FLOTHERM or Tileflow
