Lead Product IP Counsel, Music

Facebook seeks a highly motivated team player with a passion for online intellectual property issues and music to serve as Lead Product IP Counsel, Music. This position will work closely with Music Licensing, Product, Engineering, Policy and Operations teams, as well as other legal department subgroups, to provide strategic and tactical counseling on integration of music within our family of apps, products and features. This role will tackle cutting-edge music and media issues on a global scale for Facebook, Instagram, and affiliated companies and platforms. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as lead point of contact for, and advise a wide range of Product, Engineering and certain Operations teams on, music rights and related issues to optimize integration and support for music content across our family of apps
  • Develop understanding and expertise of our music license structures, obligations and relationships globally
  • Function as point person for products throughout the organization looking to integrate music
  • Provide product knowledge and insight for colleagues on the Music Legal team
  • Work with Lead Counsel for Music Rights and Implementation to appropriately advise and support products
  • Instruct and work closely with a global network of outside counsel on assessing risk and developing solutions to identified issues
  • Collaborate with other members of the legal team (notice/takedown, regulatory, corporate, privacy, etc.) to ensure business needs are met
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • J.D. with membership in at least 1 state bar, or equivalent in any non-US jurisdiction
  • 5+ years of legal experience as product counsel
  • Experience dealing with and advising on digital rights and distribution
  • Knowledge of digital music industry hot button issues, both label and publishing
  • Experience with secondary liability issues and laws in the US and abroad (e.g. DMCA, CDA, E-Commerce Directive, etc.)
  • Experience with new and evolving technologies
  • Experience operating independently and juggling multiple projects across different jurisdictions
