At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype electrical systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with a broad set of experiences, including embedded design, analog/mixed signal design, RF, or multimodal biometric sensing. The systems we work with could have ASICs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs from simple to large, displays, audio, inertial sensors, haptic interfaces, camera sensors, and high speed I/O. The ideal candidate would be comfortable designing mixed high speed digital circuit boards, be experienced with troubleshooting at the board and system level, and be familiar with agile development processes. They should have enough firmware skills to successfully bring boards up and get them to a proof-of-concept level of readiness, and the ability to work with a team of researchers with tolerance for a high degree of ambiguity. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

  • Designing, simulating, prototyping, and testing of electrical systems in experiments which combine a disparate compliment of biometric sensors, mechanics, optics and software
  • Collaborating in a team environment across engineering disciplines
  • Designing schematics, completing board layouts, assembling, testing, debugging, and integrating designs into electro-mechanical systems using industry-standard design packages such as Altium or Cadence and lab equipment
  • Transforming ambiguous requests and vendor reference designs into working custom solutions
  • Incubating new technologies into research prototypes
  • 5+ years of industry or applied academic experience in Electrical Engineering
  • BS/MS in Digital System Design/Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with schematic and board design using Cadence Orcad, Altium or equivalent
  • Experience with one or more biometric sensing technologies such as ultrasound, electrophysiological monitoring, electroencephalogram (EEG), barometric sensors, pulse oximetry, inertial measurement devices, odometry, or vision systems
  • Experience with use of oscilloscopes, high speed digital test equipment, logic analyzers, and function generators
  • Firmware experience to bring boards up and get them to a proof-of-concept level of readiness
  • Experience with one or more of the following: design of high speed differential circuits, Verilog/FPGAs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, firmware, or programmable logic based development
  • Familiarity with VR/AR systems or wearable technologies
  • Experience programming in C, creating initial system bring-up, debugging, and test code
  • Experience with one or more of the following high speed signaling methods: DP, MIPI, HDMI, and USB SS
  • Experience working independently and managing priorities
  • Experience in creative problem solving
  • Experience programming in other languages such as Python/Java/C#
