Facebook Messenger is one of the most popular products in the world for people to connect and interact. It is used by over 1 billion people monthly for messaging, voice and video calls, connecting with businesses, interacting with bots, and much more. Our more experienced data engineers are clearly characterized by in-depth technical experience and proven progression in leadership responsibility. You will be working on many projects at a time, but also focused on the details while finding creative ways to pursue big picture challenges. In this role, you will work closely with the Facebook Messenger RTC (Real Time Communication) team whose mission is to bring people together now. We are developing technology to improve voice and video communication experiences to help bring people together at any time. We are investing heavily in RTC services, media stack, audio and video codecs, networking protocols, security and privacy, and end-to-end reliability and quality experiences across a rich and diverse set of platforms. This is team that launched the Messenger Rooms, the easiest way to hangout with your favorite people on Video Chat. People can create and share a link from any family app and anyone can join, even if they don't have a Facebook account. You will be responsible for building a strong data foundation, data infrastructure and architecture in the Messenger RTC team that will help the analytics, product, engineering and RTC leadership to drive decisions and build products with a holistic view and long term optimization founded in data. You will work on some of our most challenging problems that cut across our products, solve for a number of our teams, and set high level direction for the organization.

  • Drive vision, data strategy for Messenger RTC
  • Plan, build roadmap for longer data strategies, data foundation, data assets to drive longer term needs for the team
  • Define goals and technical direction within Messenger RTC and participate in defining team goals and technical direction within org
  • Design, build and own the optimal data processing architecture and systems for new data and ETL pipelines, dashboards and experimentation metrics
  • Build core datasets as well as scalable and fault-tolerant pipelines
  • Build data anomaly detection, data quality checks, and optimize pipelines for ideal compute and storage
  • Define and own the data engineering roadmap for long term data foundation
  • Collaborate with cross functional partners including data scientists, product managers and Software Engineers and RTC leadership to design and develop end-to-end data assets
  • Actively mentored team members in their careers
  • 4+ years experience in the data warehouse space
  • 4+ years experience working with either a MapReduce or an MPP system
  • 7+ years experience in writing complex SQL and ETL processes
  • 7+ years experience with schema design and dimensional data modeling
  • 4+ years experience with object-oriented programming languages
  • BS/BA in Technical Field, Computer Science or Mathematics
  • Knowledge in Python or Java
  • Experience analyzing data to identify deliverables, gaps, and inconsistencies
  • Experience effectively collaborating and communicating complex technical concepts to a broad variety of audiences
