Component Engineer

As a Component Engineer at FRL, you will manage the methods, processes, and equipment to create mechanical component parts for both prototypes and high-volume consumer products. As an expert in materials, processing, and fabrication methods, you will work with design teams and external suppliers to deliver fully optimized product components. You will be part of a team focused on optimization of component designs using advanced tools and techniques. You will innovate in component development to create new processes and technology where needed, and you will develop external supplier capabilities that exceed those currently available in the industry. We seek people that can manage partners to efficiently deliver components that set the standard in the industry using systematic methods for consistency and quality.


  • Collaborate with design partners and production vendors to fully optimize the design, processing, tooling, delivery, and verification of product components
  • Engage with design partners and lead design for manufacturing of mechanical component designs
  • Ensure fully optimized processing of product components using advanced methods including Scientific Process Development, DOE, and Statistical Process Control
  • Manage external vendors in the design, creation, and testing of production equipment
  • Verify product component design and tooling design using simulation tools
  • Manage the qualification of production equipment and processes
  • 10+ years direct industry experience in creation of components for high volume products
  • Mass production experience (working with both domestic and over-seas manufacturing)
  • Knowledge of processing best practices including Scientific Process Development (SPD), Window studies (DOE), statistical process control (SPC)
  • Experience in component tooling design, development, and optimization
  • Experience in metal component fabrication and processing including sheet metal, casting, and machined components
  • Experience in material selection and optimization
  • Demonstrated experience managing vendors to deliver quality components on schedule
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or equivalent experience
  • Expertise in composites
  • Expertise in metal injection molding
  • Understanding of emerging technologies in additive manufacturing
  • Expertise in finishing technologies
  • Working knowledge of mechanical simulation methods including FEA thermal, structural, flow (Moldflow, Moldex3D or equivalent)
  • Understanding of metrology methods and design for verification best practices
