Communications Director - WhatsApp, India

WhatsApp is seeking an experienced Communications Director to lead the company's communications efforts in India. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the communications strategy to convey the love people have for using private messaging to connect with friends and family. This role will champion the growing products we build for businesses and educate people about key privacy and security features, including end-to-end encryption. We are looking for leaders with a proven record of building nation-wide and regional programs in India. The successful candidate should also bring deep relationships with media and opinion leaders with demonstrated success executing high-profile, creative campaigns and handling corporate issues and public affairs matters of global significance. This is a hands-on role with significant day-to-day responsibilities and an opportunity to expand a communications practice in one of the most important countries for WhatsApp.
This role is based in Delhi, and will report to the Global Head of Communications based in Menlo Park, California.


  • Develop, lead and execute communications strategies and initiatives to support WhatsApp products, monetization, and policy efforts in India
  • Drive positive coverage across a broad range of media, including consumer, business to reflect the joy people have in using private messaging, its impact for local businesses, and the importance of privacy and security for all users
  • Lead hands on education of reporters, editors, bloggers, analysts and other influencers about core WhatsApp products, values, and initiatives
  • Counsel cross-functional partners in policy, legal, marketing, and other groups within the company on a broad set of communications matters ranging from media engagement strategy to crisis management
  • Have a deep understanding and knowledge of India
  • Manage agency support in India
  • Organize press briefings, media sessions, events, prepare briefing materials and manage executive spokespeople
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong people and managerial skills - need to be able to work with people at all levels, in different geographies and manage a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • Ability to think, plan, and execute resourcefully
  • Experience of complex policy issues on a national and international basis
  • Passion for WhatsApp and the ability for people to communicate privately is essential
  • Minimum bachelors' degree
  • post-graduate or professional degrees preferred
  • 15+ years professional experience, both agency and in-house preferred
