Backbone Network Planning, Data Engineer

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our Backbone Engineering team to support the expansion of our global network through application of targeted metrics and valuable analysis to ensure we maintain our high performance. This is an ideal role for a Data Engineer that wants to work on a purpose built and ever expending network that touches and changes lives of billions for the better every day.


  • Design, construct, install, test and maintain highly scalable data management systems
  • Build high-performance algorithms, prototypes, predictive models and proof of concepts
  • Research opportunities for data acquisition and new uses for existing data
  • Develop data set processes for data modeling, mining and production
  • Integrate new data management technologies and software engineering tools into existing structures
  • Create custom software components (e.g. specialized UDFs) and analytics applications
  • Employ a variety of languages and tools (e.g. scripting languages) to marry systems together
  • Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality
  • Collaborate with network planning, modelers and data scientist team members on project goals

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a technology role
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience
  • Specialties: statistical data analysis, queueing theory, non-stationary process analysis including understanding in SQL, R and/or Tableau
  • Familiarity with network performance measurement standards and approaches, examples include (RFC2544, MEF (Y.1731) and NetFlow/SFlow)
  • Programming skills: demonstrated experience in one or more programming languages (Python, MATLAB, Java, C/C++)
  • Backend skills: experience in one or more Hadoop (MapReduce, Hive and Pig) and SQL based technologies (PostgreSQL and MySQL)
  • Statistical skills: experience in one of these MATLAB, SAS, R
