WhatsApp has been ranked as one of the Top 25 most downloaded apps in over 100 countries in the Apple App Store and has received over 1 Billion installs from Google Play.This role is broad and involves leading our legal strategy and efforts across EMEA, including supporting a variety of areas including regulatory, compliance, business, and product, legal projects, and other legal matters in the region. You must have flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs. In addition, you must have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, small but growing environment and work proactively with various teams, including the business, product management, engineering, finance, tax, and customer support teams as well as other internal and external stakeholders including legal and policy. This is a full-time position, and you may need to relocate to Dublin, Ireland to fulfill this role.


  • Develop and drive implementation of legal strategy in connection with WhatsApp across EMEA
  • Represent company before regulators and other relevant parties across EMEA
  • Develop and implement compliance strategy with applicable law and regulations across EMEA relating to privacy, security, consumer protection, marketing, competition, and telecom, among other areas
  • Potentially serve as a corporate data protection lead in the EU
  • Support regulatory, litigation, and other matters across EMEA
  • Support business and product counseling, matters, and transactions across EMEA
  • Support other areas as necessary across EMEA
  • Review and advise on pending and developing applicable law and regulation across EMEA, working with the policy team
  • Develop and manage a team of outside counsel across EMEA responsible for supporting WhatsApp's needs
  • Collaborate with other members of the WhatsApp and Facebook legal and policy teams on the above as appropriate
  • Potential to manage a team of in-house attorneys

Minimum Qualifications

  • Solicitor or barrister (qualified to practice law in a European member state)
  • Significant in-depth and related experience (10+ years) supporting and/or litigating complex regulatory, compliance, and commercial matters and representing companies in significant regulatory inquiries
  • Significant privacy, security, consumer protection, marketing, competition, and telecom experience, including engagement experiences and relationships with applicable regulatory bodies across EMEA
  • Experience serving as a data protection lead
  • Experience learning and mastering new areas of law and regulation in a variety of jurisdictions
  • Experience developing innovative and pragmatic approaches to complex legal challenges with a proven track record providing concise and business-focused legal advice
  • Experience working with mobile and other Internet and technology companies
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and provide advice under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and advance large, complex projects in matrixed environments with cross functional stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an absolute commitment to teamwork, professionalism, collegiality, and communication
  • Outstanding leadership and team management skills
  • Knowledge of, or fluency in, other European languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc.) : Must be flexible and willing to work on projects in other areas, including areas involving unfamiliar subject matters
  • Ability to live in Dublin, Ireland
  • Ability to travel throughout EMEA, to the US, and globally
  • Strong communication skills
