The goal of virtual reality is to convince your senses that you have been truly transported to another place, and doing so requires a deep, scientific understanding of the human inside the system. As an Architecture Researcher for Oculus in Menlo Park, you will apply the knowledge and skills of perceptual science to help define the future of our hardware and software. From optics to user interface, you will develop a wide breadth of experiments and metrics to grow our understanding of human perception and physical comfort while using VR. Oculus is committed to creating an engaging and immersive virtual reality experience that users can enjoy comfortably for hours. Your research will help guide our product teams towards achieving that goal by defining product requirements, comparing and benchmarking prototypes, and informing the multidimensional considerations that contribute to the design of our hardware and software. Preferred areas of specialization in perceptual science or human factors: low-level perceptual mechanisms; high-level perceptual processing; ergonomics of head-mounted displays, consumer displays, or optical instruments


  • Research perception and human factors in a variety of a Oculus products to inform product decisions
  • Develop and track metrics for benchmarking the comfort and quality of products under development
  • Develop psychophysical and behavioral experiments to better understand human perception in the context of new and emerging technologies
  • Collaborate with a variety of teams across Oculus in developing studies, then defining product requirements and specifications based on human perception and user feedback
  • Communicate findings clearly and effectively across interdisciplinary teams of researchers, engineers, and product managers

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Perceptual Psychology, Human Factors, Neuroscience, Vision science, or related field
  • 5+ years experience with experiment design, psychophysics, and statistical analyses
  • 5+ years experience working on the human perceptual system and the ability to apply such knowledge to analyzing its behavior
  • 5+ years of experience conducting scientific research
  • Experience publishing scientific findings
  • 3+ years experience with MATLAB, R, Python, or C++
