Principal Software Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Principal designer, responsible for the design, development and implementation of complete software components. Designs, develops and maintains high-quality code for highly complex product components. Manages assigned projects and work flow of engineers, serves as mentor to junior staff members. Participates on cross-functional design projects, serving as organizational spokesperson on advanced projects/programs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in the architecture, design, development and maintenance of the data plane for F5's Access Policy Manager product.
  • Help architects to detail all aspects of product design and ensures that resulting design specification fits into technical architectural framework.
  • Evaluate performance of products; tune, re-evaluate the design and implementation of current source code.
  • Project Management responsibilities: Serves as source of technical expertise to a project team and is a mentor for junior staff members.
  • Sets the direction and manages the workflow of other engineers within the scope of assigned projects.
  • Recommends and maintains technical design methodologies, processes and standards
  • Participation on cross functional design teams to develop new product as well as address design issues / maintenance of existing ones
  • Assists Architects with project scope and estimating

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 8+ years experience in the application or kernel development in the UNIX environment.
  • BS/BA in Computer Science or related field, Masters preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Expert Knowledge and extensive experience with network and web technologies (e.g. IP, TCP, HTTP, SSL).
  • Extensive UNIX development experience (IPC, networking), any kernel development is a plus.
  • Strong C programming skills required, C++ knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience with either Perl, Bash, JSP or Python required.
  • Operating Systems and networking experience such as sockets, database management, multithreaded applications.
  • Strong understanding of computer architecture such as multi-core CPU scheduling, virtual memory and caching.
  • Ability to use statistical/mathematical methods to analyze and understand performance issues.
  • Experience with TCP/IP networking and UNIX based operating systems. Experience with any tunneling technology (PPP, IPSec, SSLVPN) is a strong plus.
  • Experience in Linux development a plus.
  • Grasp of IPC mechanisms, RPC, TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL strongly preferred.
  • Experience with TCL, STL, PHP, XML, FTP, DNS, multicasting a strong plus.
