Facilities Engineer

Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Facilities Engineer will provide engineering support and document changes to existing and new qualified and non-qualified utility systems (HVAC, Purified Water, Compressed Air, Electrical) for assigned sites. This role will act as system administrator for qualified environmental monitoring and building automation systems maintaining settings, sequences, alarm management and developing improvement opportunities. The Facilities Engineer will guide qualified and non-qualified utility system design by quantifying requirements, calculating required capacities, and working with third-party experts. This role will also provide superior project management services for assigned projects. Ideal candidate has a strong background with Control Systems Design, PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) programming, and EMS/SCADA Programming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support to existing and new qualified and non-qualified building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and production support utilities following all appropriate change control requirements as applicable.
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment, troubleshoot electrical problems, and be familiar with National Electrical Code (NEC), UL508A design and construction, wiring in Hazardous Areas and related regulations, standards and practices.
  • Ability to plan, implement and document structured programming is essential.
  • Knowledge of process instrumentation, control theory and various types of control systems, data acquisition, and industrial data communication coupled with experience working with industrial process controls, IT / networking processes and general analog and digital electronics.
  • Perform modeling and testing of various SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) devices and validate data in EMS (Environmental Monitoring System) applications.
  • Update EMS displays as equipment is added/updated in Wonderware.
  • Perform EMS configuration tasks to support user access requests and other control center functionality enhancements.
  • Act as a resource for Facilities personnel for building system and utility operation troubleshooting.
  • Manage environmental monitoring systems in a manner to provide meaningful warning of system or equipment failure and eliminate nuisance alarms.
  • Utilize environmental monitoring system expertise to train users, update settings, and plan system upgrades/modifications.
  • Maintain building automation systems in a manner to ensure performance continually meets environmental requirements and root cause analysis results in the elimination of system driven excursions.
  • Monitor building systems operation for energy usage, suggest improvement opportunities, and implement as approved.
  • Maintain all record drawings including project records and current as-builts, specifications, and capacity calculation for qualified and non-qualified systems.
  • Effective technical writing skills for procedures and other documentation.
  • Support Facilities by creating statements of work, performing engineering calculations to size equipment, assisting with vendor proposal evaluation, and overseeing technical aspects of installations or modifications.
  • Process owner for revision changes on existing qualified systems following change control requirements.
  • Participate in investigations and troubleshooting associated with CAPAs, audits, or complaints in a cGMP working environment.
  • Perform engineering calculations to troubleshoot system performance and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and output.
  • Prioritize, plan, and drive projects to completion through disciplined project management methodology and tools.
  • Authorship of GMP documents and records.
  • Lead effectively in project team situations as well as work independently.
  • Execute projects as assigned.

  • Ability to work normal schedule of Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of working time.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in functions such as HVAC and associated building system operations or design for cGMP environments.
  • 5+ years of combined experience in:
    • Creating and reviewing drawings in AutoCAD or Revit.
    • Technical management of building and utility systems with evidence of strong operational performance improvements.
    • Applying engineering fundamentals in building and utility system operations and issue resolution.
    • Engineering expertise in one or more of the following areas; HVAC, electrical, or controls, with the ability to apply knowledge in a hands-on regulated environment.
    • PLC, HMI programming (Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Siemens).
    • Systems and Applications to include: EMS/SCADA (Wonderware).
    • Industrial networks; wireless, fiber optic, Ethernet.
    • Commissioning and process validation.
    • FMEA, analysis of variance, and other quality tools to drive root cause analysis.
  • 5+ years of combined experience with technical software such as: iFix, Wonderware (system platform), Unity, Factory Talk View, AutoCAD, Visual Basic, Siemens, Allen-Bradley RSLogix and ControlLogix, Rees Scientific Presidio Software and Modicon PLCs.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an FDA, CLIA, or CAP regulated industry preferred.
  • Inductive Automation or Wonderware ArchestrA certification preferred.
