Software Developer – 3D Geometry (Urban Design)

At the Esri R&D Center-Zurich, we develop the Esri CityEngine software as well as Esri’s core 3D web technologies including the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. Join our team of exceptional software engineers to design and implement urban design and planning web apps based on CityEngine, our JavaScript API, and our cloud solution ArcGIS Online.


  • Conceptualize and develop the 3D geometry core for a new suite of web apps for urban design and planning
  • Design, implement, and test an efficient procedural modeling engine on top of our JavaScript API
  • Work closely with CityEngine and JavaScript API software developers and product engineers in a highly interactive and creative environment
  • Apply and promote good software engineering practices such as test automation, modularization, simplification 


  • Strong background in computer graphics and computational geometry
  • 2+ years of practical experience in software development 
  • Excellent programming skills in a modern programming language 
  • Excellent creative thinking and communication skills 
  • Interest in (learning all about) urban design and planning as well as 3D GIS, BIM, and CAD
  • Master’s or PhD in computer science

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, WebGL, WebAssembly, Rust
  • Experience with Agile software development methods (Scrum, etc.)
  • Knowledge of 3D tools such as CityEngine, Maya, Unity, Revit, etc.
  • Knowledge of common web technologies and 3D formats
