Data Visualization Engineer

Overview

Do you have a passion for helping people understand complex data through engaging visualizations? Leverage your data visualization passion and technical knowledge to develop the next generation of collaborative civic technology. 
 
We are looking for someone to join our team as a data visualization product engineer working closely with product management and software engineering. Your work will include research, design, and development of new web and mobile based chart and map data analysis and visualization capabilities in ArcGIS Hub. These capabilities will be used by government staff, academic researchers, and the public to freely explore their own data through visual analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to utilize your broad knowledge of data analysis, human-computer interaction, systems design, and business operations along with your superior client support skills to solve problems and research issues.
 
Esri works with thousands of governments around the world to build effective information sharing and collaboration tools to address important community issues such as climate resilience to affordable housing and safe transit. As a member of the ArcGIS Hub team, you will communicate with municipal government and community organizations to understand their workflows and shared goals, and then work together to integrate or design technologies and best practices.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with product management, product design, and software development to identify, define, and manage the implementation of data visualization product capabilities
  • Create and maintain relationships with government customers, our user community, and Esri partners to document user requirements and best practices
  • Compile, organize, assemble, and visualize common data layers, e.g. policy data, facilities, demographics
  • Communicate best practices for designing and implementing data visualizations through tutorials, blog articles, help documentation, videos, and presentations
  • Work with other product teams to integrate data sharing and exploration capabilities across the ArcGIS platform, including online, desktop, and mobile platforms
  • Create and maintain user personas, roles, security, profiles, workflow rules
  • Develop and implement test cases and validate bug fixes
  • Troubleshoot production issues and customer support requests

Requirements

  • Industry experience with data visualization, spatial and statistical analysis, and data-driven communications
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to coordinate multiple projects/tasks across various user groups
  • Demonstrated technical ability for writing visualizations in JavaScript, Python, D3 or other visualization libraries, as well as HTML, CSS
  • Experience testing and validating software capabilities
  • Training and experience with agile development methodologies
  • Organize teams of developers and designers to deliver quality solutions on time
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's or master's in computer science, journalism, GIS, or related field; or at least 5 years of experience in related disciplines
 
Recommended Qualifications:
  • Additional education and/or experience with computer science, mathematics, journalism, public policy, or related field
  • Familiarity with Esri’s ArcGIS platform and online services 
  • Knowledge of UI/UX design techniques
