ET Tour Director

Our Story

EF’s mission is opening the world through education.

With programs focusing on language, academics and cultural experience EF operates 500 schools and offices in 53 countries. To date we’ve helped millions of people learn a new language, discover the world or earn an academic degree.

For 50 years EF Educational Tours has helped teachers and students from North America discover the world through culturally immersive educational travel. Through experiential learning they gain new perspectives, develop important 21st century skills and become true global citizens all at the guaranteed lowest price.

The best part of any EF tour is having an insightful, culturally connected Tour Director. As well as organizing the logistical running of the itinerary, they contribute to their group’s understanding and appreciation of British and Irish culture, history and languages. For us there is no stereotypical Tour Director profile, we work with people from all sorts of backgrounds, but one thing they all have in common is a passion to share their experiences and knowledge with others.

Our Tour Directors

From reconfirming bookings to performing hotel safety checks, the Tour Director role is varied, challenging and fun. Ultimately you’ll ensure the pre-defined itinerary is executed, getting your group between destinations safely and efficiently, while providing educational commentaries and guidance. You’ll know which sites are a must see, be able to suggest the best places to eat and shop, and share your insider information with your group.

Great organizational and inter-personal skills are needed for range of tasks, such explaining how to navigate the London Underground, giving a coach commentary or coordinating hotel check-in. You must be a problem solver, diplomatic and able to think on your feet while always providing a high level of customer service. Our work at EF changes lives - as a Tour Director, you’ll play an integral role in that process.

We need people who are:

  • Organized - you’ll be handling the day to day tour logistics alone
  • Confident – even if it’s a destination you’re not familiar with, you’ll have to lead the group
  • Enthusiastic – you might be talking to groups of up to 50 people, you’ll need to keep their attention
  • Problem solvers – on the road problems arise and you’ll need to make the right decision to fix them
  • Passionate – about travel and it’s educational value
  • Personable – you’ll need to build a fast rapport and strong relationships with the students, teachers and adults on your tour.
  • Diplomatic – you’ll be dealing with our customers, suppliers and colleagues from across the globe.
  • Professional – on tour you’re the face of EF
  • Knowledgeable – about Europe: history, culture, languages, current affairs. You’ll be answering a lot of questions.

The Basics

You’ll typically be offered work around 30 days before a tour is due to depart. Our peak periods are around Easter and June to July. Work is seasonal and your offers will be on a tour-by-tour, freelance basis, but we need to you to be available to lead tours during our peaks.

You’ll benefit from the varied materials and resources we have on-line and in house at our Regional Offices, but you’ll be expected to research the interests of your group, as well as the history and culture of the destinations you’ll be visiting. You’ll be asked a lot of questions!

So, what’s next…?

If travelling across the UK & Ireland, making an impact and sharing the places you love, interests you, then you might be what we’re looking for.

Complete the attached application form and send it back to us with a passport photo.

If your application is successful you’ll be invited to take part in initial screening and/or a selection day. This typically happens in the autumn. Successful applicants will then go through to our training days during the winter.
