Manager, Site Reliability Engineering

Our hive, headquartered in Toronto, is growing quickly and we are specifically looking for a Manager for our Site Reliability Engineering team. 

What will you do? 

Our Site Reliability Engineering team has grown rapidly - as ecobee scales up our teams, and increasingly takes on a wider variety of initiatives, you will help define how the Site Reliability Engineering team works internally and with the broader organization. Reporting to the Director of Site Reliability Engineering, you will be given the support, freedom and autonomy to bring your great ideas to fruition here! There are lots of opportunity for process implementation and improvement - as a relatively new team at ecobee, we are working towards defining a culture of Reliability across all departments in the organization, both in development and non-development teams. With products in different stages of their lifecycle there is considerable variety in this task - you may be collaborating with our product development team to define and enforce SLIs and SLOs, working with our customer service agents to improve our non-traditional and semantic monitoring capabilities, or working with our agile coaches to codify how our teams balance between new feature development, reliability improvements, and technical debt retirement. 

The ideal candidate has an eye for good talent to lead our team growth initiatives (including hiring and working with our existing team to identify and encourage areas for personal and professional growth). In addition to scaling our team, as our company scales, so does our customer base. Our products are hosted in many different environments, including AWS, GCP, and on-premise. Leaning on your project management experience, you can make a considerable impact by leading the SREs and our agile product teams through large projects including migrating legacy applications to one (or multiple!) cloud environments, and implementing state-of-the-art tools and technologies like Kubernetes.

As a member of the management team, the focus will be on you to help lead and encourage training initiatives - this may be leading presentations at our all-hands meetings to introduce new tools or processes, lining up conferences for our team members to attend, or facilitating meetups at our beautiful offices in downtown Toronto. ecobee has a strong management cohort, so the training and growth opportunities also extend to you. You'll have lots of opportunities to refine your management skills with structured training programs and access to the experience of veteran managers in the software development space.
