Software Engineer

Earnest is seeking a Software Engineer to join our growing team. You will be part of a data-driven decision-making culture and will collaborate with our data engineers to help build out our data platform and enhance existing systems that drive our business. 


  • Be the resource within the company for your technical domain expertise
  • Use development best practices to build resilient and secure systems and evangelize those practices to other members of the team
  • Write clear and well documented code that can be reused
  • Collaborate with the team in the development and delivery of new product features
  • Maintain an architectural vision aligned with product goals, represent risk and cost of technical debt to product leader, and refactor when appropriate
  • Evolve current systems and innovate new solutions to provide greater resiliency and faster recovery from problems
  • Be comfortable working with and depending on other engineering teams
  • Possess the ability to think through unique situations from a multitude of perspectives
  • Perform hands on coding with Python, Clojure and SQL experience
  • Participate in on-call support rotations


  • Ability to write solid, clean, defensive, code 
  • Ability to organize and oversee complex refactoring
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with non-technical business leadership
  • Proven track record of mentoring more junior engineers
  • Significant experience in at least one backend programming language such as  Python, Java or Scala (we work in Scala  and Clojure) 
  • Strong SQL experience 
  • Comfort on the unix command line
  • Experience working in Agile environments
  • Experience building and managing deployment to production
  • Experience with RESTful APIs and API design
  • Ability to validate approaches and architecture decisions against wireframes and business needs
  • Familiarity with AWS services - SQS, RDS, Elasticache, Lambda
  • Ability to debate merits of different QC methodologies
  • Ability to select and evaluate new tools against engineering and company wide requirements
  • Experience developing and maintaining the back-end of a data-focused web app
  • Extremely committed, hard working and thoughtful with the ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
