LEAD SENIOR ENGINEER

Earnest is seeking a Lead Senior Engineer who will report into our Head of Engineering, but work day to day for the product team lead. In this role, you will leverage your past experiences and expertise to evolve the current sourcing systems and work directly with the business leaders to deliver the product goals and expectations for the product team. You will grow the existing engineering team while working with other engineering teams to leverage their solutions and blend this unique data set into existing product offerings. This role will require the ability to balance business and engineering needs within a fast paced, data driven culture. You must be comfortable with daily management of the engineering team as well as rolling your sleeves up to complete routine engineering tasks. Over time, this person will have the opportunity to develop into an Engineering Manager as this team succeeds and grows.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report into Head of Engineering on team capacity and health, infrastructure needs and changes, and assuring team is on track to meet goals
  • Handle real time conversations about ideas and problems with product owner
  • Own technical delivery of the product roadmap and represent the possibility of current system to achieve goals
  • Organize the engineering team to deliver on top priorities
  • Increase data quality through constant reduction in product errors/failures and greatly increase capacity of current systems
  • Provide dedicated SQL support and explanations of data source considerations to Data Analyst team
  • Run code reviews to assure best practices are followed and advanced, while maintaining security expectations established by head of security
  • Maintain an architectural vision aligned to product goals, represent risk and cost of technical debt to product leader, and refactor when appropriate
  • Evolve current systems and innovate new solutions to provide greater resiliency and faster recovery from problems
  • Comfortable working with and relying on other engineering teams for delivery aspects of the product
  • Ability to think through unique situations from a multitude of perspectives
  • Hands on coding with strong Python and SQL experience
  • Maintain 1:1 weekly review process for the team and be the primary force in hiring and evolving the engineering team for this group
  • Design and evolve process to support product and engineering (agile, kanban, waterfall, etc)
  • Evolve their role into more management and architecture as the team and product succeeds

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1+ years’ experience as a lead engineer delivering solutions dedicated to a single product working directly with the product owner
  • Able to clearly and effectively communicate with non-technical business leadership
  • Senior engineering background
    • 8+ years experience as a software engineer
    • Solid, clean, defensive, code
    • Able to run complex refactoring
  • Experience with AWS tool, especially EC2, RDS, and RedShift
  • Python 3+, Postgres, Linux (systemD nice to have)
  • Strong SQL experience in a stats/reporting centric platform
  • Built and managed deployment to production
  • Able to debate merits of different QC methodologies
  • Experience in web scraping, a plus
  • Experience supporting a data analyst team and product, a plus
