Lead Engineer

Earnest is seeking a Lead Engineer for a new product currently in stealth mode.  In this role, you will leverage your past experiences and expertise to evolve the current systems and work directly with the business leaders to deliver the product goals and expectations. You will grow this product’s existing engineering team and work with other engineering teams to leverage their solutions and blend this new unique data set into existing product offerings. This role will require the ability to balance business and engineering needs within a fast paced, data driven culture. You must be comfortable with the daily management of the product’s engineering team as well as with rolling your sleeves up to complete routine engineering tasks. Over time, this role will focus more on management as this product team succeeds and grows.


  • Manage team capacity and health, infrastructure needs and changes, and assuring the team is on track to meet goals
  • Handle real time conversations about ideas and problems with product owner
  • Own technical delivery of the product roadmap and represent the possibility of current systems to achieve goals
  • Organize the engineering team to deliver on top priorities
  • Increase data quality through constant reduction in product errors/failures and greatly increase capacity of current systems
  • Provide dedicated SQL support and explanations of data source considerations to Data Analyst team
  • Run code reviews to assure quality and that best practices are followed and advanced, while maintaining security expectations established by head of security
  • Maintain an architectural vision aligned with product goals, represent risk and cost of technical debt to product leader, and refactor when appropriate
  • Evolve current systems and innovate new solutions to provide greater resiliency and faster recovery from problems
  • Be comfortable working with and relying on other engineering teams
  • Possess the ability to think through unique situations from a multitude of perspectives
  • Perform hands on coding with strong Python and SQL experience
  • Maintain 1:1 weekly review process for the team and be the primary force in hiring and evolving the engineering team for this group
  • Design and evolve process to support product and engineering (agile, kanban, waterfall, etc)
  • Evolve the role into more management and architecture as the team and product succeeds


  • 1+ years’ experience as a lead engineer delivering solutions dedicated to a single product working directly with the product owner
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with non-technical business leadership
  • Possess a senior engineering background
    • 8+ years’ experience as a software engineer
    • Solid, clean, defensive, code
    • Ability to organize and oversee complex refactoring
  • Experience with AWS tools, especially EC2 and RDS (RedShift is a plus)
  • Python 3+, Postgres, Linux (systemD is a plus)
  • Strong SQL experience in a stats/reporting centric platform
  • Built and managed deployment to production
  • Ability to debate merits of different QC methodologies
  • Experience in web scraping, a plus
  • Experience supporting a data analyst team and product, a plus
