Head of Data Science

As the steward of Duolingo's massive data sets, you will be responsible for building up a team of Data Scientists and directing the continuous improvement of our internal analytics products. The Head of Data Science will be responsible for all aspects of the data science program, from the computer systems utilized, to the recruiting of world class talent and the implementation and operation of Duolingo’s data insights systems. You will ensure that product and business teams have the data, insights, and recommendations they need to make high-stakes decisions. The Data Science team will start out small, requiring the Head of Data Science to be a hands-on contributor but as the company grows it is expected that this person will build and lead the Data Science organization.   • Set the vision, road map, and priorities for data science at Duolingo
  • Build the team, systems, and practices that enables Duolingo to leverage cutting edge data mining and machine learning techniques
  • Define team org design and interfaces with the rest of the company, partner with business leads to support the analytics needs of different teams
  • Problem-solve with product and business teams, advise executive team how to leverage data science across the company
  • Help guide the development of our internal analytics products
  • Ensure the quality of our tracking and data
  • Help preserve our culture of fact-based decision making as we scale


  • Experience hiring and managing Data Scientists with demonstrated success in leading and managing teams in technical projects from conception to production
  • 7+ years relevant industry experience in data science at a tech company (ideally consumer)
  • MS or PhD degree in a quantitative field (e.g.: statistics, economics, computer science, ML/AI)
  • Experience implementing and operating production scale software systems that implement sophisticated machine learning or data mining algorithms on platforms such as Spark
  • Expert-level skills in SQL, R, Python, and statistical methods to analyze behavioral data
  • Experience with “big data” technologies like Redshift, Spark, Hive, BigQuery
  • Applied experience with machine learning on large datasets (e.g.: ETLs, Redshift, Spark)
  • History of publishing papers on machine learning or data mining a major plus
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA


  • PhD degree in a quantitative field, as listed above
  • Gaming industry experience (e.g., balancing in-app economies for mobile games, improving subscription conversion and/or churn rates)
  • Experience articulating business questions, and using available data to find answers that translate into business recommendations
  • Demonstrated self-direction, with a desire both to learn new techniques and teach others
