Sr. Research Engineer - Software

The applicant will be a corner stone member of the team leading the software development, integration and demonstration platforms for new ideas and experiences. The team has the responsibility and high visibility to create solutions that help devices work together in an orchestrated way - to help users hear and be heard. Work will extend into real time audio processing, system design, efficient communication protocols and full stack audio. The work is aligned and supported by the corporate innovation strategy to advance the science of sight and sound to deliver spectacular experiences. Work in this role will focus on ensuring that that services can hear and understand us in a way that improves our life. The challenge and advances in audio processing will focus on managing input and output audio across distributed, uncertain, asynchronous audio devices. The Internet of Things Audio.

We are commissioning an exciting new lab in North Sydney mirroring a conventional house but equipped with thousands of audio channels and ready for multi-media extension. Reporting into the senior algorithm lead, the applicant will be responsible for efficient and scalable implementations, and bringing together external components and multi-media subsystems to achieve spectacular demonstrations in the lab. We are expecting a variety of challenges, ranging from time-critical technology demonstrations, through to optimized algorithm implementations and rigorous customer facing releases. The applicant will be required to recognize changing requirements and respond fluidly. The work will be targeted and quickly realized and tested with real application, real users and real devices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Coding, Optimization and Architecture
    • Signal processing algorithms, implementations and optimization
    • Managing codebase, integration, operation and stability of concept demonstrations
    • Structured approach and internal release to facilitate integration of ideas into product
    • Understand and work with networked audio infrastructure and processing at scale
  • Algorithmic Exploration: Think it, visualize it, hear it, show it, believe it
    • Implement visualization and techniques to intuitively appreciate and advance designs
    • Prioritize perception over precision for shaping interactive audio experiences
    • Lead and assist iterative tuning and empirical refinement of user experience
  • General Role and Activity
    • Support communications on project direction and clearing of technical issues.
    • Participate in open sharing of new ideas, collaboration and securing IP
  • Large Scale Data Acquisition, Processing and Analysis
    • Working with Hardware and Laboratory team members to acquire and manage data
    • Tools and techniques for large scale statistical algorithm performance analysis
    • Manage transfer, use and assessment of results from deep learning groups

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Higher degree in STEM area with a focus on signals, data, math, processing and or analysis
    • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) and at least six years' research work experience or
    • Master's Degree (or equivalent) and at least four years' research work experience or
    • PhD (or equivalent)

  • Very strong technical skills, deep understanding and work experience in some or all of
    • Audio signal processing, DSP implementations, filtering, transforms
    • Estimation and analysis, array processing, spatial information, soundfields
    • Understanding of audio, propagation, speakers, microphones, amplifiers, digital audio
    • Signal extraction, noise reduction, echo management, source separation
    • An appreciation for spatial audio capture, representation, reproduction and perception
    • Data visualization, machine learning, timing and signal recovery, sonar, control
    • Proficient at design and development of code in C, Matlab, Julia, R or similar
    • Highly desirable and preference for above areas on real microphone real world use cases
    • Highly desirable familiarity with the challenges of echo on real world devices

  • Teamwork and Communication
    • Willingness to follow alternative ideas and approaches to signal processing
    • Track record of team contribution, continued learning and time management
    • Excellent English written and verbal communication in technology-specific applications
    • Able to travel occasionally internationally for leadership and demonstration work
