TITLE: Senior Research Engineer

JOB SUMMARY:
The world is changing, with audio devices being connected to the internet and delivering a continuous blend of entertainment, communications and information services. The industry is predicting that within the next few years most households will have multiple voice-interface capable devices and that these devices will be able to cooperate to deliver new use cases and enhanced experiences. Delivering such solutions requires a blend of creative and diverse thinking and the ability to venture from the conventional. Your role at Dolby is to develop, prototype, and refine new algorithms that enable an amazing variety of experiences in communications, speech recognition, and spectacular audio playback by intelligently understanding the audio world around us. This exciting role will have significant growth opportunity, pushing you to break with conventional thinking on topics such as spatial audio rendering, source localization, echo cancellation, and system robustness.

To take on this role, you will need a strong theoretical background in audio signal processing along with practical hands-on experience working with real audio equipment. You are proficient in at least one software language and ready to take, learn and integrate ideas and code from others. You possess a willingness to learn and the patience to transfer knowledge and learnings forward.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Algorithm Development

o Develop algorithms from conception to testing in real environments
o Integrate algorithms into a larger complex interconnected system
• Software Engineering
o Implement real-time audio algorithms
o Collaborate on large codebases
o Work with networked audio infrastructure and processing at scale
• Technical Documentation
o Write and maintain detailed technical documentation
o Read and write technical research papers
o Protect intellectual property with a strong patent portfolio

REQUIREMENTS:
• M.S or Ph.D. with a focus on audio and acoustic signal processing
• Exposure to audio algorithm development in an industry setting
• Solid background in the theory and application of digital audio signal processing, linear algebra, and probability
• Demonstrated ability to innovate, prototype, and collaborate in the area of audio signal processing through projects, papers, products, and/or patents
• Experience with real-time implementation of audio algorithms
• Practical experience with audio playback and recording equipment
• Software engineering training or demonstrable proficiency in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, Julia, or R
• English written and verbal communication

HIGHLY DESIRED:
• Technical understanding of and experience with several of the following:
o Spatial audio perception and reproduction
o Standard audio algorithms such as filtering, dynamics processing, noise reduction, etc.
o Frequency domain processing
o Psychoacoustic models
o Room and transducer acoustics
o Acoustic measurement techniques
o Numerical optimization
o Adaptive and statistical signal processing
o Source localization and separation
o Multichannel signal processing for microphones and loudspeakers
o Deep learning
• Critical listening skills
• Background in music
