Engineering Manager - Growth

Discord is looking for a highly technical, creative, hands-on and mission-driven Engineering Manager to partner with Product, Data, Design and Marketing. This will be direct business ownership of the creation and organization of teams to support our growth plans, including recruiting for the ICs and managers of those teams and ensuring their success. Managers on the Growth team are product-driven thinkers who focus on helping new users create meaningful relationships with each other and the tens of millions of others who use our app every day. Our small, nimble growth team is passionate about developing well-designed, scalable software to create conversations, communities, and a place for belonging to our millions of users - while maintaining good work/life balance. We believe that a clean, delightful, interface is important to achieving the best user experience. Currently more than 250 million people use Discord, this team will support the onboarding and success of the millions to come.

What you'll be doing

  • Build exceptional teams of highly-engaged engineers by hiring, coaching, and instilling a sense of ownership and impact, directly and through your managers
  • Work with Product, Design, and Marketing to define your team’s vision and roadmap by thoroughly understanding your customers’ needs
  • Leverage your technical expertise to constantly raise the bar and ensure your team delivers extraordinary results at the high technical level we set
  • Make sound first-principle decisions around resourcing, and making the rationale clear to partners and team members
  • Partner with your director on strategic planning and to continuously improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy

What you should have

  • You have 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer
  • You have 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager and have successfully managed a team of 5+ Software Engineers
  • You're a mentor, a storyteller, and you're great at coordinating with a variety of teams throughout the company
  • You excel in undefined environments and get excited about finding and building solutions to complex technical challenges
  • You enjoy coming up with pragmatic solutions to concrete problems using first principles thinking
  • You are passionate about coaching and leading other engineers, but love to code when the opportunity arises

  • You have worked on growth or products teams that use data to inform product direction
  • You enjoy jumping into the data yourself to learn more about users and size product opportunities
  • You have experience hiring for fast-growing startups
  • You love experimentation and get excited when numbers move by 1%
