Chief Financial Officer

Reporting to the CEO of Democracy Prep, the CFO is responsible for leading the development, expansion, integration and implementation of Democracy Prep’s fiscal strategy, which needs to evolve the finance functions and infrastructure of the charter management organization (CMO). The ultimate goal of the fiscal strategy is to ensure that Democracy Prep has timely, transparent and accurate financial information to allow the Board of Directors and the executive team to make strategic decisions and mitigate risk.

A successful CFO will be a thoughtful and exceptional leader, adding value throughout the Organization on business strategy and strategic direction. The CFO will continue to elevate the finance role as an integral “front office” function, leading business planning and bringing strong business acumen to decisions across functional teams.

The CFO is also expected to be capable of representing the mission and accomplishments of Democracy Prep to internal and external stakeholders and donors. It is critical for the person holding this position to have strong analytical and communications skills, including the ability to tell the financial story of the organization. 

What You’ll Do

Financial Strategy

  • Develop and manage a profitable business plan which includes building up the appropriate net asset levels to ensure the economic sustainability of the organization’s current operation and future strategic plan
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight for all budgeting activity associated with project and program development
  • Set the overall annual budget objectives which support the strategic plan and multi-year financial forecast for the organization
  • Lead conversations with the Boards of Directors conveying confidence and control over the organization’s financial positions and decisions
  • Provide a financial expert’s voice for internal and external stakeholders including strategic donor relationships, various school Boards and superintendents
  • Establish the annual fundraising targets, working closely with the Development team to ensure that fundraising goals are specific, achievable and timed to the needs of the organization
  • Design, enforce and continue to improve internal processes to maintain the highest level of financial prudence possible
  • Design controls to safeguard assets, ensure transactions are properly recorded and the accounting records accurately reflect all donor specific earmarks
  • Provide the perspective and guidance to continue to improve the business intelligence platform, connecting and sharing information across divisions

Financial Management

  • Manage and develop a full-time staff of professionals responsible for the day-to-day finance responsibilities of the organization:
    • Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
    • Financial planning and analysis
    • Procurement, purchasing and contract/grant compliance
  • Present quarterly financial presentations to the Board of
  • Directors and lead all activities with the Finance and Audit Committee
  • Maintain a timely and accurate monthly and annual close process
  • Ensure the organization is optimizing its revenue sources and is appropriately predicting and addressing program funding deficiencies
  • Manage and provide oversight to ensure that all regulatory filings, audits and tax returns are completed accurately and timely
  • Provide constant monitoring on financial risks, taking into consideration project activities, cash flow concerns, and fundraising pipeline development
  • Administer and be a primary point of contact for the Organization’s 403(b) program

Who You Are

A financial professional with the experience to successfully:

  • Interface directly with the CEO, multiple School Board of Directors, and key stakeholders to effectively communicate financial goals, budgets, forecasts, and contingency plans in a solutions-oriented and timely manner
  • Build the systems to ensure budgets and financial allocations are aligned to DPPS strategic priorities for over 20 schools in 5 regions and that we stay within our annual budget (>$10 million)
  • Communicate and equip School & CMO Leaders with the knowledge and systems to effectively develop their budgets in order to promote sustainability, sound decision-making, and our scholars’ learning
  • Lead the vision to successfully oversee your finance team and support their ability to properly maintain solid accounting systems and achieve goals
  • Spearhead the annual budgeting process with the CEO and board finance committees, resulting in clear financial metrics to manage all aspects of the organization
  • Oversee the timely execution of internal and independent financial audit activities and filing of tax returns for all our schools
  • Establish and maintain procedures to assure compliance with financial laws, regulations, and requirements.  Your diligence allows DPPS to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and standard nonprofit accounting practices
  • Ensure accurate and timely implementation of accounting systems, reporting and monitoring of organizational performance metrics, and provides analysis of trends in organizational finances identifying areas of financial soundness and concern.
  • Manage and track the performance of Democracy Prep’s banking relationships in keeping with the policies and guidelines established by the board.
