Senior Manager, Strategic Planning


Cox Automotive seeks a Senior Manager, Strategic Planning in the Atlanta, Georgia office.

The Senior Manager, Strategic Planning will partner with Media Solutions Group, Cox Automotive Strategy Team, and key internal stakeholders to inform and drive the creation and execution of Media’s short- and long-range strategy and strategic planning process. This process includes the formulation of the Media Solutions Group vision, mission, long-range strategy, short-range strategic plan, definition of metrics and tools for measuring strategy execution and achievement of strategic priorities. Additionally, this position will assist department heads and other key internal leaders, as necessary, to formulate aligned department strategies. The Media Solutions Group is comprised of 3 businesses: Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book and and the individual will have responsibilities that span across all the businesses. The Senior Manager, Strategic Planning will also be responsible for executing broadly defined and often unstructured special projects that may span across Media Solutions.


Long-range strategy:

  • Develops the long-range strategy framework and approach and gains alignment with Executives.
  • Facilitates the creation of Media’s purpose, business definition, and strategy with Media Execs and CAI Strategy.
  • Translate business vision and strategy into operational tactics; identifies the organizational support and infrastructure needed to achieve them.
  • Assists department heads to develop long-range, departmental business strategies that align to the Media strategy.
  • Synthesize information from multiple sources to generate insights and recommendations on business strategies and opportunities.
Actively communicates findings, insights, and recommendations on a timely basis.
  • Creates business cases and detailed financial models & metrics that reflect the business rationale, operational and financial milestones of specific initiatives across the Media group.
  • Synthesize, analyze, and assimilate strategies from discussions to create presentations reflecting business unit strategy on behalf of Media.
  • Acts as central point of contact for business unit for strategy.
  • Act as a liaison between CAI Strategy Team and Media Solutions.

Annual strategic planning:

  • Develops short-range strategy framework and approach, gains alignment.
  • Drives and facilitates the Media annual strategic planning process and creation of the Playbook (priorities and their definitions, desired outcomes, performance objectives) in alignment with budgeting.
  • Actively support the annual budget process through liaising with Cox Auto Corporate Strategy and helping to execute the planning process.
  • Assists department heads to develop aligned annual business strategies.
  • Creates business cases and detailed financial models & metrics that reflect the business rationale, operational and financial milestones of specific initiatives across the Media group.
  • Build Media Solutions performance metrics and assist in the measurement of actuals vs. plan.
  • Track progress of plan and report out to Media Group and Cox Automotive Executives and stakeholders.

Communication and Reinforcement of Strategy and Strategic Plans:

  • Responsible for documentation associated with long and short range vision, strategy, strategic plan.
  • Partners with Internal Communications to develop plan for communicating outputs of strategic planning process to all levels of the Media Solutions organization.
  • Partners with Internal Communications on messaging, internal and external presentations and business unit-wide communication of strategy and strategic plan.
  • Ensures messages related to strategy, priorities, and metrics are aligned and accurate.

  • Partners with a variety of internal stakeholders and leaders to ensure all levels of the Media Solutions Group understand and are aligned to the long-range strategic direction of the company.
  • Drives employee education and engagement around Media’s long-range and short-range vision, strategy, and strategic plan.
  • Develops mechanisms to reinforce the strategic direction, such as alignment to employee annual goals and performance management process.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Execute special projects (akin to management consulting engagements) that are broadly defined and generally lack structure.
  • Drives ad-hoc analysis of business issues in collaboration with Media Solutions leaders.
  • Drive Prioritization of Media Solutions work and lead trade-off decisions, if necessary.
  • Drive Media work intake process into the various Cox Automotive planning channels leveraging the Cox Automotive CAFÉ process.


  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university. MBA or another advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years in a consulting firm, or 6+ years in corporate strategy, with a blend of experience in strategy, operations, and finance. 

  • Digital media and/or digital marketing, or automotive experience preferred.

  • Ability to influence and work effectively with executives and leadership.
  • Strong communications (oral + written) and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure situations that require sound decision making and may involve confidential or sensitive matters.
  • Project management experience.
  • Analytical skills are required.

  • Ability to think independently and problem solve ambiguous issues.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, growth company environment (sense of urgency, adaptable, champion of change).
  • Experience leading large and small scale projects and strategic assessments with a wide variety of scope while consistently applying critical thinking skills.

  • Travel as needed (up to 25%).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including the ability to build detailed financial models.
