Principal Software Engineer

Software Architects at CommonBond play a central role in building the infrastructure that drives the products and technology. We are seeking a Software Architect to make high-level decisions for software development, system architecture, and integration architecture. You will see the “big picture” and create architectural approaches for software design and implementation to guide the development team. More specifically, you’ll work with the Engineering Director and Product Manager to manage a group of engineers to build a suite of employee benefits applications that deliver significant value to our enterprise level clients.

Functions

  • Collaborate with other professionals to determine functional and non-functional requirements for new software or applications
  • Use tools and methodologies to create representations for functions and user interface of desired product
  • Develop high-level product specifications with attention to system integration and feasibility
  • Define all aspects of development from appropriate technology and workflow to coding standards
  • Oversee progress of development team to ensure consistency with initial design
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to developers and engineers
    • Ensure software meets all requirements of quality, security, modifiability, extensibility etc.
    • Keep your coding skills sharp.  50% of your time will be design, coding, testing and running the systems
  • Participate in all Scrum ceremonies – planning, grooming, reviews and retrospectives
  • Work with product management and stakeholders to define a product backlog
  • Work with your team do develop a committed sprint backlog
  • Manage the performance of your team members, coaching and mentoring them to further their careers
  • Make hiring decisions for individual teams
    • Recruit highly talented engineers for CommonBond, conducting phone screens and on site interviews
  • Contribute to the technical and process innovation of the Engineering department
  • Collaborate with other development teams and cross functional groups
  • Lead an Agile team of 3-6 developers, QA engineers, UX designers and product managers who form a product development team
  • Contribute to effective code reviews on more than just the technical correctness of the code (quality, eng best practices, etc.)
  • Coach and mentor team members to accentuate their strengths

Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience, with 4+ years of leadership experience and 4+ Agile scrum master experience
  • Excellent coding, design and architecture skills. Software that is reliable, testable and maintainable should be what you do by default
  • Experience with Lending Systems required
  • Experience with highly scalable, containerized, micro service architecture required (kubernetes a plus!)
  • Track record of time of making sound business decisions that yielded best possible outcomes
    • Ability to through ambiguity and facilitates cross-team decision-making to impact company goals based on data
    • Ability to manage conflict, redirect divisiveness to constructive conflict
  • Good sense of product/technology/data trade-offs and buy/build/integrate decisions
  • Highly accountable for personal delivery of their own projects but also demonstrates an ability to work with others (that may or may not be on their team) to deliver meaningful results on-time
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with other managers and is well respected by other engineers
  • Experience designing and building event sourced architectures in a CI/CD environment is a plus
  • Keen listening skills & ability to motivate others
  • Strong interpersonal & leadership skills
  • You enjoy writing software and take pride in what you build
  • Having programmed in Java will help you get going faster, but your primary languages aren’t as important as being a great programmer - a little Python or Golang would be a plus
  • SQL proficiency, particularly with PostgreSQL is a plus
  • BA/BS or above from a Computer Science program preferred
  • Ability to work daily in our office in New York City
