RF Engineer, Advanced Radio Systems (R&D)

Our goal is to create technologies that allow Collins Aerospace Mission Systems to differentiate our products from the competitors' and create new market opportunities through innovation. We're presently creating state-of-the-art electronics, including: phased array SATCOM terminals that provide global internet connectivity, multifunction reconfigurable RF front-ends, and modular UAV radios for communication, radar, and electronic warfare.

Job Summary:

Perform research & development in radio frequency (RF)/microwave/millimeter wave design and development.
  • Architect, design, simulate, layout, test, and troubleshoot RF hardware for communication, navigation, radar, and electronic warfare products (includes updates and clean sheet designs)
  • Direct layout for analog/RF/microwave/mmWave circuit card assemblies
  • Participate in collaborative efforts to creatively solve problems in innovative ways
  • Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design
  • Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects that result in new approaches and techniques to product development
  • Monitor performance of assigned project tasks (including technical, cost, schedule, design to cost, product integrity and manufacturability)


Key Competencies:
  • Demonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze using RF/microwave tools such as Keysight ADS, NI Microwave Office, Cadence Virtuouso, SPICE, or SystemVue
  • Must be able to complete meaningful work in the absence of complete specifications and help create RF system requirements as a work in progress
  • Demonstrates technical knowledge/expertise in multiple technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassemblies
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and data-driven decision-making
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a creative, as well as practical problem solving environment


Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in the appropriate discipline and 3 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 7
    years of relevant experience is required.


DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated ability to do own PCB layout using CR-5000 or other drafting tool
  • Experience in integrating RF components/assemblies with digital components including microprocessors, FPGAs, or programmable logic devices.
  • Experience in using transceiver components: filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, frequency synthesizers
  • Bid & proposal resulting in successful capture of funding
  • Experience with test plans
  • Experience with environmental effects testing


Working Conditions: This position requires domestic travel up to 5% of the time. Work hours are typically Monday-Friday with very occasional weekends required. Work can take place in an office environment and microelectronics laboratory.

Supervision: The RF Engineer does not have direct reports, but will direct work activities for supporting technicians, drafting, and project support staff. The RF Engineer will work collaboratively with component designers and other multi-disciplinary engineers. The RF Engineer is led by the Associate Director for RF Systems who is led by the Executive Director for Mission Systems Advanced Technology.

Physical Demands: This position does not require physically strenuous activities such as lifting, carrying pushing, or pulling.

Relation to Other Jobs: The RF Engineer will work with a team of other engineers and technicians. The RF Engineer must collaborate with internal and external customers, peer engineers, finance, and leadership.
