The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for providing campus safety services to the university community which includes: enforcing university regulations, vehicle and traffic laws, and local, state and federal laws. Duties also include providing emergency response on campus and protecting life and property within the Colgate community. In addition, the Campus Safety Officer engages in outreach and communication efforts to students. As a Dispatcher, responsibilities include providing professional and courteous customer service as the first level of contact for students, faculty, staff and the general public requesting campus safety assistance. Duties include promptly receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls, maintaining radio communications and providing clerical support.
Campus Safety Officer
- Patrol & inspects all assigned areas, assuming responsibility for the safety and security of the people and property of the campus.
- Investigates, documents & reports incidents, disturbances, complaints, alarms, and any irregularities observed.
- Evaluates situations, problems, emergencies and uses discretion to resolve the problem, or notifies and refers the proper authorities or departments for resolution.
- Responds quickly and responsibly to any emergency or stressful situation; renders first aid and/or performs CPR and/or AED as necessary.
- Assertively and professionally manages & controls traffic, crowds, unruly and/or intoxicated individuals.
- Maintains a working knowledge of university and department policies and procedures, keeping up-to-date on required information to effectively enforce and warn violators of rule infractions, this includes but is not limited to motor vehicle traffic and parking regulations.
- Communicates and interacts effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and visitors on a daily basis.
- Works in collaboration with the Dean of the College staff, faculty and student groups to promote an inclusive campus community culture.
- Participates in educational sessions on any university policy related to student conduct, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment and bias-related conduct.
- Promotes understanding of similarities and differences in student populations and diverse cultures in all areas of the university community.
- Promptly receive emergency and non-emergency calls requesting campus safety assistance; determine nature, location and priority of the call and dispatch assignments and information to various field units concerning incidents and activities accordingly.
- Coordinate, monitor and engage in radio communications, cellular and land line telephones between officers, other personnel and off-campus agencies (fire, police, EMS , facilities/B&G, athletics, CS student employees and confined space entry staff).
- Operate the info line telephone system current equipped with an auto attendant.
- Maintain communications with patrol officers; track locations, conditions of situations and respond to requests for assistance.
- Document and report incidents, disturbances, complaints, alarms and any irregularities observed in shift logs or other forms as required.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and logs of all radio transmissions, telephone calls and other inquiries or incidents; post appropriate entries in logs and records reflecting calls received and dispatched. Record building security checks as well as other shift activity. Prepare corresponding reports, inter-office special reports and other confidential information as necessary.
- Frequently check the department email account in order to receive notifications of upcoming events and communicate events to staff by print and log entries. Run reports at the beginning of shift outlining current and future events.
- Assist with training and/or have oversight of officers and student employees when applicable.
- Issue and process parking permits, parking ticket appeals and other data entry as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Professional Experience/ Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required along with the ability to interact effectively in a diversified community.
- Ability to multi-task and perform in a busy and stressful environment is essential.
- Must be able to physically respond to all incidents and emergencies throughout the entire campus and be able to perform all duties in a safe manner. This includes the ability to climb stairs in a timely manner, to patrol on foot, and to drive a radio equipped motor vehicle and use the radio for communication purposes.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks and follow up efficiently and promptly is essential.
- An understanding of the constraints and legal/ethical requirements of confidentiality and privilege of information required.
- Must possess and maintain a current and valid NYS driver's license with a responsible driving history.
- Must be able to successfully complete the five day Security Officer Academy or demonstrate successful completion of the NYS Police Officer Basic Academy.
- Must be able to meet all requirements of the NYS Security Guard Act of 1992 in order to be registered and maintain registration as a Security Guard.
- Must be able to successfully complete the department's Campus Safety Officer Field Training program and dispatch component.
- As a designated "essential employee", must be able to remain on duty beyond normal shift or report to duty without advance notice; must be able to work any time of day, day of the week and holidays.
- Must be able to receive, evaluate, prioritize and relay calls.
- Ability to use special equipment within the dispatching center such as voice recorders, TTY equipment, alarms, pc's, phone consoles, CCTV cameras, card access system, radio equipment, fax and copy machines and related software systems.
- Associate's degree in criminal justice or related field or equivalent military experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and familiarity with Banner desired.
- Previous related work experience as a campus safety/security officer or police officer, and/or prior experience working in a college/university public safety environment is preferred.
- Experience in recognizing and resolving and/or referring to emergency and stressful situations highly desired.
- Knowledge of local and state laws desired.
- CPR , EMT and First Aid certification highly desired.
- Experience in telephone and radio communication systems highly desired.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
