Software Engineer - Addressing Team
- Austin, TX
At Cloudflare, we have our eyes set on an ambitious goal: to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers approximately 25 million Internet properties, for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

Come join us!
About the Addressing team
Cloudflare operates one of the largest and most interconnected anycast networks on the Internet. To make that happen, a complex orchestra of IP address configuration and distributed systems need to be in harmony to deliver packets from users, through our edge network and then onwards to our customers origin servers or networks. The Addressing team maintains a centralised platform within Cloudflare for managing network address configuration.
The Addressing team works closely with our global Network, Edge Operations and other product engineering teams to build automated products/systems that span the entire Cloudflare stack. Addressing is one of the most critical platforms here, and as such there is an extremely high level of quality and reliability expected of the software we are designing.
Projects range from writing code in our edge DNS server handling millions of queries per second, to designing traffic engineering tools that manage the massive number of connections terminated on our L7 CDN. The Addressing team is also responsible for our BYOIP (Bring Your Own IP) customers, helping to deliver global DDoS protection with Magic Transit and other Cloudflare services. BYOIP is a crucial part of what the Addressing team does, bringing the power of our network to our customers networks, for all products and services.
We are looking for talented Software Engineers to join our small but growing team. You will work on a range of microservices written mainly in Go. You’ll be designing and developing new APIs and data models to manage our rapidly expanding addressing needs.
The ever growing suite of Cloudflare products and services means our addressing tools are always evolving. You will have the opportunity to take on very impactful projects critical for Cloudflare. You will spend time learning the inner workings of our edge routers, servers, DNS and IP provisioning pipelines. You will work closely with other engineers to understand their needs and create scalable platforms to be used across the company.
Some of the technologies we use include Go, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kafka, Lua, Clickhouse, Prometheus and the usual Unix/Linux tools and workflows. We strive to build reliable, fault-tolerant systems that can operate at Cloudflare’s scale.
- You are naturally curious and willing to take a step to learn something you don’t have experience in
- You lead. We are a growing team and you will have a huge role shaping our products, tools and system designs from the ground up
- You have experience writing high-quality code in one or more system programming languages (Go, Python, C/C++)
- You have experience with modern Unix/Linux development and runtime environments
- You have a solid understanding of TCP/IP and basic networking in general
- You have a basic understanding of the HTTP/S/TLS stack
- You have a working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
- You have experience building and operating distributed systems
- You have excellent debugging skills and attention to detail when breaking down problems
- Experience working with Go
- Familiarity with anycast or multi-site unicast networks
- Knowledge of DNS and DNS based traffic management techniques (e.g geo dns)
- Familiarity working with IP Address Management Systems
What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: We equip politically and artistically important organizations and journalists with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.
Athenian Project: We created Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration.
Path Forward Partnership: Since 2016, we have partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit organization, to create 16-week positions for mid-career professionals who want to get back to the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or loved one.
220.127.116.11: We released 18.104.22.168 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.
Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
