About the Department

Cloudflare’s Network  Engineering Team builds and runs the infrastructure that runs our software. The Engineering Team is split into two groups: one handles product development and the other handles operations. Product development covers both new features and functionality and scaling our existing software to meet the challenges of a massively growing customer base. The operations team handles one of the world’s largest networks with data centers in 102 cities worldwide and a couple of large specialized data centers for internal needs. Our operations are split across our 4 main timezones: San Francisco, Austin, London and Lisbon, Singapore.

What you'll do

You will lead a team of passionate, talented network engineers who are building a network that touches billions of web requests each day. In this role, you will run our edge network deployed in more than 200 locations in the world and empowers millions of websites. You will mentor, grow, and empower your team by giving them the skills and confidence to make decisions.

You will play an active part in shaping our operations strategy based on what’s technically possible. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering standpoint.

You bring a passion for meeting business needs with building technically innovative solutions and excel at shifting between the two—understanding how big-picture goals inform technical details, and vice-versa. You thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience in delivering scalable distributed systems. Most importantly, you will have a track record of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.

This role is based in our London office.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • 4+ years of experience in engineering management, and operating a network 24/7, with oncall rotations and incident management.
  • Solid foundation in network engineering, with strong competencies in layer 2 and layer 3 protocols, IPv4 and IPv6, BGP routing, and building large, distributed networks.
  • Solid understanding of DNS, HTTP and its variants, DDoS patterns
  • Excel at planning, creating teams and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability
  • Demonstrate a track record of managing a team including hiring, onboarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to reach higher. You’re as good as explaining “why” as you are “how”
  • Experience implementing tools, process, internal instrumentation, methodologies and resolving blockages
  • Comfortable managing teams/projects with tight deadlines and short release cycles

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity working with Internet performance, Anycast routing
  • Experience founding or leading a startup
