- San Francisco, CA
What you'll do
You will lead a team of passionate, talented engineers that are building innovative products that touch billions of web requests each day. In this role, you will introduce tools and processes to make our engineer’s lives better. You will play an active part in shaping product strategy based on what’s technically possible. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering standpoint.
You bring a passion for meeting business needs with building technically innovative solutions and excel at shifting between the two—understanding how big-picture goals inform technical details, and vice-versa. You thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience in delivering scalable distributed systems. Most importantly, you will have a track record of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.
Cloudflare is a growing company and engineering is an ever-evolving organization with teams being formed and redefined often. Here are a few examples of the types of teams that an Engineering Manager might oversee.
Edge / Distributed Systems
Cloudflare well-known for our vast network and its performance. Teams that work on the Edge are focused on high-throughput, bare-metal, mission critical systems. These teams use technologies like Nginx, Lua, C, and Rust.
Cloudflare has a number of user interfaces - from our onboarding flows all the way into the customer-facing dashboard. We have teams that excel at translating the powerful and potentially complex solutions that Cloudflare builds into attractive, intuitive, accessible user interfaces. These teams use technologies like React/Redux, and interface with backend services written in any number of languages.
Full Stack / Microservices
Cloudflare’s control plane is Microservice-based, with many of these services being written in Go. Many of Cloudflare’s product engineering teams are made up of polyglot programmers who might be backend, frontend, or full-stack developers.
As a security company, some of Cloudflare’s teams are exclusively focused on secure system design, cryptography, and security-related tools and processes.
Cloudflare handles tens of millions of requests per second, which we need to turn into actionable insights for our customers. Our Data-related teams work with technologies like Kafka and Clickhouse to make this happen.
Trust & Safety
Cloudflare’s mission is to help build a better internet and the Trust and Safety engineering team lives at the core of that effort. The team empowers customers with products and services to combat abuse, enables deeper coordination with our external industry anti-abuse partners, and ensures teams in the company can scalably respond to the quickly changing legal landscape of the internet.

What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: We equip politically and artistically important organizations and journalists with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.
Athenian Project: We created Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration.
Path Forward Partnership: Since 2016, we have partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit organization, to create 16-week positions for mid-career professionals who want to get back to the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or loved one.
