DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The HR Safety Coordinator position provides services toassigned city departmentsand has the responsibilities of coordinating safety activities and providing vital support for special related safety programs. A primary responsibility is coordinating activities and maintaining records related tothe city's motor vehicle policies and procedures. Compliance includes timely employee notification, scheduling the review panel assembly and proper submission of employee appeals. Additionally, maintain Safety Performance History data for allDOT-regulated employees. Within specified timeframes, assembling and providing a Driver Investigation History File for prospective employers; and if applicable, address driver rebuttals to the Safety Performance History data and responses to the rebuttals from the former DOT-regulated employers

Safety Coordinator position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responding to and maintaining records of personal injuries and vehicle crashes that involve City employees and damage to city property to determine cause and distributing records to requesting sources.
  • Advising field supervisors and others on safety trends, hazards, controls, policies, procedures and programs and making the information readily available.
  • Developing and providing statistical data to the various service lines within HPW to include incident and vehicle statistics.
  • Conducting or participating in group and safety committee meetings in a support and advisory capacity with all levels of management.
  • Scheduling continuing education to obtain certifications, maintaining and achieving certifications and continuing education records for the safety team.
  • Confers with employees' physicians on a routine basis to ensure that the employees are physically able to perform job functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. The position may also require climbing and/or certain body contortions.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
An Associate's degree in Technology, Business Administration, Safety Administration or a related discipline; or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to three years in duration.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience in safety administration or a closely related field is required. Pertinent professional work experience may be substituted for the above educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.


PREFERENCES

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as ability to work independently. Must possess ability to handle all information as confidential and able to multi task to meet deadlines. Comprehensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

PAY GRADE: 15
