DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides review and analysis of documents to ensure compliance with various codes, ordinances and regulations. Analyzes and reviews and plans to determine life safety and quality standards to grant approvals for permits. Conducts preliminary reviews. Review properties within the City of Houston service area to ensure all billable services are being billed. Based on the review of information provided geospatial tools, plans, and county tax assessor's data base. Review residential and commercial permitted applications and supporting documentation. The permit applications should be approved or rejected based on the documents and information provided. Enters specifications data into a computer. Researches letters of utility commitments. Performs various statistical calculations. Performs other related duties as requested.
This position routinely requires stooping or bending and/or routine lifting of moderately heavy items, such as plans (up to 40 pounds).
This is a Department of Public Works & Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a related Associate's degree, such as Building Inspection, or the equivalent. May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Building Inspection, Architecture, Engineering or a closely related discipline may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of skilled, journey level experience in building trades, inspection or plan examining in the area of analysis to be performed are required.
Two additional years of skilled, journey level experience in building trades, inspections or plan examining in the area of analysis to be performed may be substituted for the above degree requirement.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

However, the department may administer a skills assessment evaluation.
