DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The individuals will monitor the swimming activities and deck safety of the public to ensure adherence to safety precautions. Enforce the pool facility rules. Maintain and operate basic pool maintenance and water safety equipment such as vacuuming, brushing down sides, cleaning filters and setting up equipment (seats, ropes, umbrellas, rescue tubes, backboards, etc.). Perform basic housekeeping activities such as checking restrooms, offices, porches and swimming areas. Participate in special classes required for lifeguard training. Assist with the development of all competitive swim programs. Check chemical reading on the PH. Balance and chlorine level. Complete a variety of forms, logs and time sheets. Inspect facility for hazardous condition that may have occurred overnight. Must be courteous and cooperative with public at all times.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Must possess excellent swimming skills. This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. This position may involve routine exposure to soiled material and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSMust be able to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. Must have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area. Must be certified in Lifeguard Training or Water Safety Instruction and First Aid/CPR.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires six (6) months of experience as a lifeguard or water safety instructor are required.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: NONE
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
Selected applicants who already possess the required certification must be certified by a city-approved agency. Applicants who are not certified may receive certification through the Parks and Recreation Department at a low cost to the individuals.
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: New applicants must successfully pass a Lifeguard Swim Evaluation for consideration. Upon submission of application, candidate must contact the Parks & Recreation Aquatics Office at 832/395-7129 to schedule an appointment.
