Job Title: Supervisor/Manager, Cancer Risk Counseling

Position Summary and Key Responsibilities:

As part of a multidisciplinary team help provide individuals and families information about genetics and cancer risk assessment process, and assist them with strategies to cope with cancer risk information. This position is accountable for the oversight of the Cancer Risk Counselors. Assist with the design and conduct of clinical research trials within the Department. Act as a team leader in clinical and administrative settings. Coordinate patient scheduling and oversee clinic matters, as well as act as a liaison for the Division.

Essential Functions:

  • Train and direct the work of Cancer Risk Counselors.
  • Collection of detailed family histories (both maternal and paternal).
  • Retrieval and review of medical records for key affected individuals.
  • Pedigree assessment and recognition of cancer susceptibility syndromes.
  • Use appropriate models to estimate genetic and empiric cancer risk.
  • Assist with informed consent discussion, including benefits of genetic knowledge and family risk communication, privacy, confidentiality and discrimination issues.
  • Educate patients about the medical and psychosocial implications of cancer risk and genetic testing.
  • Advise and assist the attending physician regarding selection of laboratory, coordination of testing and interpretation of test results.
  • At the direction of the attending physician, provide patient education regarding riskappropriate medical management and screening options.
  • Assist the attending physician with psychosocial assessment.
  • Provide post-test education, counseling and support.
  • Scribes medical consultation reports jointly with physician.
  • Participates in Departmental cancer genetics research, including but not limited to enrolling subjects, coordinating studies and taking a primary role in design of new projects.
  • Prepares and presents research results at professional meetings, and co-authors related publications.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Supervisory Accountabilities:

  • Coordinates clinic and supervises clinic-related matters, including triage process, patient scheduling, phlebotomy and encounter documentation.
  • Develops and assists with implementation of new clinic procedures and protocols to ensure highest quality of patient care.
  • Coordinates internships and oversees genetic counseling student and fellow rotations.
  • Serves on institution committees as a representative of the division.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Reporting Relationships:

The position directly supervises: Total of 6 direct reports (4 genetic counselors, 1 clinic coordinator and 1 pedigree project specialist.)

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Master of Science in Genetic Counseling with ABGC board certification or MSN/MN and APRN license
  • 8+ years of experience in genetic counseling or equivalent APRN experience, 3+ years of experience in cancer genetics specialty.
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification. Must hold a California state license within 120 days of hire. Nurse Practitioner License or Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License or Registered Nurse License from one of the following four organizations (ANCC, AANP, AACN, PNCB) and one of the following oncology certifications from OCNN (AOCNP, AOCNS, OCN).
  • 3+ years of lead/supervisory experience, working with others to supervise/delegate tasks is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to accurately assess heritable cancer risk
  • Ability to effectively communicate genetic concepts of cancer risk information to patients and families
  • Ability to deal with families in crisis
  • Work well in clinic and office setting while supervising clinical team
  • Work well with supervision in the clinic setting
  • Work independently with minimal supervision in the research venue
  • Bilingual in Spanish would be a plus
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint required. Familiarity with Oacis, Epic and Progeny pedigree database is preferred.
