Job Title: Staff Scientist - Center for Gene Therapy

Position Summary and Key Responsibilities:

He or she will work with the research team to actively participate in project discussions and user support among bioinformaticians, statisticians, project manager and researchers. The job will include, but is not limited to, enhancing/maintaining bioinformatics research cyber-infrastructure, software/database installation, license update/maintenance, data pre-processing and interaction with scientists for user support and trouble shooting. Work closely with the research PI and Bioinformatics to provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in support of grant applications and manuscript preparation, data integration, and analysis. Responsibilities include keeping good time tracking for project management and documentation of research results and presentations to various technical and non-technical audiences for chargeback and overall COH missions.

Position Accountabilities:

  • Work with research PI and Bioinformatics to provide technical assistance to support investigators and facilitate translational research through the application of informatics tools and technologies.
  • Assist vendors with design, evaluation, and benchmarking new computer technologies to enhance performance and throughput of high performance computational needs.
  • Provide implement and maintain for a portfolio of commercial, open source and internally developed bioinformatics applications, server, and database solutions.
  • Document and present research results to various technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Communicate effectively with researchers by following up with literature and bioinformatics computer technologies to provide collaborative research support.
  • Provide project summary and usage metrics reports to project manager and PIfor effective team support for bioinformatics research.
  • Provide end-user software training for investigators, technicians, and graduate students.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure, and to keep abreast of latest trends in field of their expertise.
  • Attend meetings as required and participate on committees as directed.
  • Maintains a positive image when dealing with department personnel and other City of Hope employees.

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Participates in problem-solving sessions.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or related field. Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements
  • Experience with data analysis, visualization, and integration in the areas of genomics and functional genomics, including gene expression analysis, transcription regulation analysis, pathway analysis, and/or sequence analysis.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language, such as Perl, C, C++, or Java, is required; Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a UNIX / Linux environment.
  • Preferred Courses/Training:Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology.
  • Preferred Field of Expertise:Bioinformatics.
  • Software:NCBI, UCSC genome browser, Ensemble open source bioinformatics software applications and databases as well as commercial software for analysis DNA/RNA, protein and their ligand complexes.
