Position Summary
The Staff Scientist will be responsible for high quality written scientific documents for funding applications and publications, including but not limited to editing grant proposals, scientific manuscripts for peer review, and other scientific documents. This position is also expected to assist with updating templates and boilerplate language for grant proposals. The Research Development Scientist will work closely with laboratory and clinical researchers across the institution to facilitate the development and enhancement of extramural grant proposals and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Responsibilities Include:
- Grant Proposal and Manuscript Editing : Review editorial and scientific/technical aspects, edit/write portions of the text, and frame the project as appropriate for the specific application. They will consult with and advise faculty in the design and preparation of new projects for funding. They will help identify and match investigators to appropriate grant opportunities. They will also assist the Manager with planning and development of multi-project proposals as well as in integrating the science and ensuring logical connections among the multiple components.
- Data Presentation : Work with investigators to ensure the clarity and accuracy of data presented, as well as the interpretation of results. They will contribute to the aesthetic aspects of data and text presentation, including formatting of text (to required specifications) and refinement of clear, appealing data figures and graphics.
- Develop In-depth Knowledge of Institutional Research Goals and Areas of Emphasis : Expected to become well-versed in the terminology, biology, and treatments associated with the faculty researchers with whom they work and the departments those investigators are housed in. Research Development Scientists will attend institutional research forums and symposia and seminars, and relevant retreats, seminars, and conferences to gain a thorough familiarity with the ongoing research interests of the PIs in the institution.
- Teaching : Assist with planning and conducting educational courses and workshops on grantsmanship and scientific writing.
- Other Activities : Assist the Manager with various projects involving scientific documents (e.g., annual/occasional reports on scientific activities within the institution, templates, and standard institutional text for research proposals).
- PhD in biology, biochemistry, or other life science. Experience may substitute for the education required.
- NIH or DOD research grant writing
- Familiarity with data analysis techniques, graphing methods, and interpretation of laboratory and clinical data.
- To protect the health of patients and staff and to comply with new State of California mandates, City of Hope staff are required to show proof of full vaccination by September 30, 2021. Compliance is a condition of employment.
