Under the supervision of the Vice President Corporate and National Philanthropy (CNPP), the Senior Executive Director of Development, National Strategy (SEDOD-NS), will ensure the fundraising success of the philanthropic program by serving as a subject matter expert, a professional role model and an identified team and program leader. The incumbent, having demonstrated leadership and success in the field, will execute strategies that support the shared vision of the Preparing Our People initiative. This effort includes preparing our office for the rigors of a campaign, to realize our goal of excelling as a highly collaborative, efficient and creative team. The SEDOD will implement a cultural adherence to personal accountability, shared success and a commitment to professional growth.

The SEDOD-NS will contribute by employing and role modeling key processes and programs that support an office-wide focus on collaboration, efficiencies and metrics-based performance outcomes, in addition to primary role responsibilities.

In this role, the SEDOD-NS will collaborate with the VP, CNPP; SVP Advancement Operations and Giving Campaigns; and AVP Prospect Development to build a national fundraising strategy encompassing events, affiliate groups, individual giving and national and signature events. The SEDOD will have individual accountability for developing and monitoring metrics defining success and directing future strategy. The SEDOD will lead a team of 2-5 direct reports who manage the analytics, operations and finance aspects of the National fundraising efforts to achieve its performance goals, with an emphasis on accountability, mentorship and collaboration.

Within national focus, the SEDOD will spend 5-10% of time traveling for management purposes. The incumbent will work in partnership with CNPP staff, as well as key staff in Advancement Operations and Giving Campaigns and Office of Philanthropy colleagues to feed the pipeline of major gift donors, develop and socialize metrics and reports analyzing event success and creatively developing metrics to direct future deployment of staff and resources to build and implement a national strategy.

The SEDOD will ensure the success of direct reports and their teams based in the Rivergrade office. Will provide oversight, coaching and strategy development advice, as well as facilitating the necessary collaboration throughout the Office of Philanthropy to achieve success. The SEDOD will provide thoughtful and timely performance feedback, and role model and maintain adherence to a frontline focus.

The SEDOD will have demonstrated success in building long-term collegial relationships and have the ability to work successfully with staff with variable levels of technical skill. Will have demonstrated experience in the full spectrum of development including solicitations, volunteer engagement and campaign management. The incumbent will have strong analytical, written and oral communications skills, exhibited through the development of successful internal communications. Established success at building internal (IT, finance, facilities, administration) relationships is required, as well as the ability to engage these partners in successful collaboration to improve the OOP and CNPP infrastructure.

Incumbent will have a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience, having demonstrated the ability to motivate and reward success, provide course correction as needed, and motivate a team around shared and individual goals. Will have exhibited the ability to understanding individual and team goals in larger institutional context, providing insight into program and people management in alignment with larger institutional goals. Will have displayed commitment to accountability and collaboration, and ability to support this same commitment in direct reports.

These experiences will have been secured with seven or more years of consecutive experience in a healthcare or non-profit environment.

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead development and management of metric based indicators for guiding CNPP business development

  • Implement metric based programs for directing and supporting a national fundraising strategy
  • Analyze CNPP business models and practices and implement program to ensure cost effectiveness.
  • Identify, develop and manage national fundraising efforts in support of City of Hope priorities and initiatives.
  • Implement tools to year/year comparisons, modifications and goal setting
  • Socialize best use of analytical tools by CNPP
  • Develop Data for Stewardship for CNPP programs and activities

Manage a national strategy, operations and finance team (currently one SDOD, seven campaign assistants, two analysts and two revenue admin analysts. Team subject to grow with program. ) The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to motivate staff toward adherence to key performance indicators and to maintain a productive culture. Includes:

  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics and articulating opportunities for employees' growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Provide leadership throughout employees' tenure, from interviewing and making thoughtful hiring decisions, and providing foundational onboarding to new employees, to ensuring high employee retention within the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Responsible for fiduciary accounting of the funds raised through CNPP programs, activities and campaigns.
  • Responsible for department oversight and ensuring a positive working relationship between other City of Hope Departments and employees. Position includes direct oversight of employees and the management of a work team that is integrated into the larger industry-based fund-raising effort.
  • Responsible for meeting established performance goals for team

Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:

  • Support SSLT in implementing campaign strategies
  • Participate in search committees, task forces and other special projects.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact and strong communication skills.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of the key fund-raising priorities for COH.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Master's in business, business administration or related field
  • Experience may substitute for subject area requirements.
  • Must have at least 7 years of experience in a healthcare, tech or non-profit environment.
  • Must have at least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Blackbaud CRM

  • Advanced degree
  • Six Sigma
  • Experience utilizing Tableau
