Senior Director of Development, Affinity and Legacy Groups

The Senior Director of Affinity and Legacy Groups reports directly to the Assistant Vice President, Affinity, 3rd Party and National and Signature events. The Assistant Vice President as a member of the Philanthropy Leadership Team, in concert with the Corporate and National Philanthropy program team, will help ensure the fundraising success of the Office of Philanthropy through a number of executive-level responsibilities. This effort is in keeping with the shared vision of the Preparing Our People initiative to prepare our office for the rigors of a campaign, and to realize our vision of excelling as a highly collaborative, efficient, and creative team. The AVP- ANE will contribute to this vision by providing expertise and executive leadership and will be a partner to the SDOD—ALG in creating and implementing our vision of being known institutionally and nationally as a model of excellence among elite fundraising programs.

Specifically, the SDOD-ALG, under the direction of the AVP-ANE, is responsible for building, leading, growing and stewarding a national volunteer donor program consisting of affinity and legacy groups with the goals being to raise direct revenue and fuel our national individual donor pipeline. This program will build on City of Hope’s rich, 100+ year old history of outreach through a national network of legacy chapter auxiliaries that helped create awareness, involve, and cultivate prospective donors. The Affinity and Legacy program in development will re-envision the historic chapters to meet the expectations of today’s volunteer force and to play a highly integrated with City of Hope’s individual donor pipeline efforts. These efforts are focused on identifying individuals who are interested in financially contributing to advance COH’s critical work in cancer and diabetes research as well as this a model of compassionate care that can inform institutions worldwide.

The SDOD-ALG provides strategic insight and guidance regarding Office of Philanthropy fundraising programs/priorities via volunteer groups and the groups’ related activities and events. This includes assistance in developing and staffing a national council of senior volunteers, now in development. The SDOD—ALG will demonstrate sound judgement and discretion in working with key influencers to balance the interests of volunteers with the needs of City of Hope as it builds a national program, its infrastructure, leadership, and governance

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead the unit in reaching and advancing its goals in developing a donor-centric, synergistic, efficient and highly effective national fundraising program includes:

  • Preserve and advance the brand and reputation of City of Hope.
  • Build and advance strategy to advance COH national donor outreach through Affinity groups and Legacy chapters
  • Analyze and implement integrated programs for the Legacy and Affinity groups that ensure cost effectiveness while maximizing philanthropic returns and individual prospect identification.
  • Working with Legal, and Marketing and Communications, among other key COH areas to ensure legal and brand compliance.
  • Working with SDOD, Operations and Finance, ensure data integrity and integration into CRM.
  • Work with select volunteers do build a national program identity, including a potential national volunteer council.
  • Working with SEDOD-National Strategy to provide prospects for individual donor prospect pipeline.
  • Meet annual activity and financial performance metrics.

Managing the unit: Lead the ALG team with a focus on accountability, best practices, and collaboration. The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to motivate staff toward adherence to key performance indicators and to maintain a productive, highly collaborative and integrated culture. Includes:

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics, and articulating opportunities for employees’ growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills.
  • Provide leadership throughout employees’ tenure, from interviewing and making thoughtful hiring decisions, and providing foundational onboarding to new employees, to ensuring high employee retention within the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of the key fund-raising priorities for COH.
  • Responsible for fiduciary accounting of the funds raised through ALG.
  • Responsible for ALG staff oversight and ensuring a positive working relationship between other City of Hope Departments and employees. Position includes direct oversight of employees and the management of a work team that is integrated into the larger fund-raising and pipeline development effort
  • Responsible for meeting established performance goals for ALG.

Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics, and articulating opportunities for employees’ growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Master’s in business, business administration or related field
  • Experience may substitute for subject area requirements.
  • Must have at least 7 years of experience in a healthcare, tech or non-profit environment.
  • Must have at least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Blackbaud CRM

Preferred Education and Skills:

  • Advanced degree
  • Six Sigma
  • Experience utilizing Tableau
