Position Summary

The Senior Analyst, Corporate Financial Accounting & Reporting will be responsible for the analysis of financial information to determine fair presentation in conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and for developing and maintaining analytical management reports pertaining to assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and cash flows of the organization. The individual will be required to develop a robust understanding of City of Hope financial reporting structures so as to analyze, prepare and effectively communicate information arising from changes in operations, acquisitions and/or other integration activities.

The individual will partner with Corporate Accountants, Business Analysts and other key stakeholders to implement financial reporting improvements such as enhancing the use of new and existing systems and tools, customizing financial measurement models in PeopleSoft, rationalizing the number and use of cost centers in the system, optimizing accrual and reserve methodologies, improving manual and automated procedures and leading the preparation of external regulatory reports.

The individual will also be accountable for various month-end close activities including preparing a consolidated analysis of financial performance, providing insights into complex accounting transactions, compiling the month end reporting package, coordinating the resolution of inquiries and identifying corrective actions arising from financial review and monitoring timely preparation of balance sheet reconciliations in Blackline. These responsibilities will require continuous assessment of month end close procedures in order to identify opportunities for improvement.

Additionally, the individual will have accountability for developing, maintaining, and monitoring compliance of a governance framework which will be the foundation for a strong internal controls environment within the organization. This framework will form the basis upon which to maintain the GL and ensure standardized use of accounts and application of policies across entities. Success in this area will safeguard the integrity of City of Hope financials and ensure a successful audit.

To this extent, the individual will be required to make recommendations as to how to close current gaps within the control environment. Recommendations should be based on discussions with the manager as well as Internal Audit. Current process opportunities include but are not limited to establishing Segregation of Duty guidelines, standardizing materiality levels, and creating overall best practices on good governance.

Essential Functions

  • The following framework illustrates essential functions which are required for the success of the role.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to develop reports needed to perform key processes.
  • Identify and quantify issues that impact financial data and work with line manager to achieve timely resolution.
  • Perform analyses of financial performance, forecast and trends and provide insights to management to ensure continued conformance with financial objectives.
  • Prepare and/or interpret complex or very complex accounting transactions and records. Analyze data in order to initiate/recommend corrective action as needed.
  • Conduct meetings with Corporate Accounting leadership team to discuss and present reporting solutions.
  • Conduct periodic meetings with GL Accountants and other stakeholders to analyze variances of actuals vs budget and to understand the enterprise.
  • Help prepare quarterly presentations for the CFO to Committees and Board of Directors.
  • Help prepare financial information to external stakeholders.
  • Provide thorough review of controls & risk assessment for the enterprise. Will include creation, maintenance, and monitoring compliance of an overarching controls document for the City of Hope Corporate Accounting team.
  • Actively identify (and close) control gaps and various deficiencies. Examples include Segregation of Duty conflicts, gaps in levels of authority matrices, standardization of materiality levels utilized in day to day tasks (including flux analysis), etc.
  • Support the close process (month and year-end). This will include (but is not limited to) monthly intercompany settlement process, consolidation of City of Hope financial statements, customization of PeopleSoft reports and preparation of various month end reports.
  • Play a lead role in year-end tasks including preparation of financial statements and footnote disclosures as deemed necessary by line manager.
  • Ensure integrity of the financial statements by monitoring appropriate use of GL accounts and cost centres and recommending changes such as inactivation of cost centres and GL accounts.
  • Monitor timeliness of reconciliations in Blackline and publish status reports.
  • Support line manager in providing an assessment of current GL processes such as request for chart strings, accrual methodologies etc. and provide recommendations.
  • Provide the necessary interface to internal and external audit teams as required and provide necessary information regarding accounting procedures and data.
  • Lead in the development and implementation of new systems or enhance existing systems to resolve problems or improve accounting/financial processes.
  • Follow established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines includingadherence to theworkplaceCode of Conduct and Compliance Plan.

Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or Business related field. MBA and CPA Preferred.
  • 5+ years preferably in a corporate finance role.
  • Must have demonstrated financial accounting skills and controls.
  • Public and Private Accounting experience a plus.

  • Strong analytical capabilities coupled with the ability to identify issues, obtain mutual agreement as to the resolution and implement change.
  • Strong GAAP and Financial Statement knowledge and internal controls experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
