Professor & Chair - Department of Diabetes and Cancer Metabolism

City of Hope has a long and impressive history of groundbreaking discoveries in the field of diabetes. It spans more than four decades of intense investigation sinceRachmiel Levine, M.D., who discovered the role of insulin in glucose transport, launched diabetes research at City of Hope.

City of Hope's Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute is headed byArthur D. Riggs, Ph.D., another pioneer in the field renowned for his work on synthesizing the first man-made gene and using synthetic genes to produce human insulin. This first practical source of human insulin has largely replaced porcine- or bovine-derived insulin and has become the standard of care for diabetes worldwide.

The newly created Department of Diabetes and Cancer Metabolism within theDiabetes and Metabolism Research Institute (DMRI)at City of Hope has an opening for a professor & founding department chair.

The DMRI is a component of theBeckman Research Institute (BRI)of the City of Hope. City of Hope's research depth in cancer, diabetes, and metabolic disease is deemed an important differentiator, with opportunities for scientific and clinical distinction. This interface of diabetes and cancer has been highlighted as a key component of DMRI's strategic plan.

The successful candidate will be a nationally and internationally renowned scientist whose research is at the interface of diabetes & cancer metabolism. Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD and possess an exceptional record of scholarly accomplishments as evidenced by high impact publications, substantial extramural funding and national & international awards. In addition, the position requires that the candidate must also have demonstrated basic and translational program leadership and mentoring skills.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are required as s/he will be interacting with colleagues across City of Hope including students, researchers, clinical faculty and administrators. The department chair will be work closely with leadership in the recruitment of new faculty to build and establish this exciting new department.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills Required for Consideration:

PhD and/or MD

Scholarly accomplishments to qualify for appointment at the rank of Professor

National and international scientific leader
