Position Summary

The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer works independently and as part of a team, collaborates with subject matter experts, physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical specialists and leadership to develop high quality medical narratives documenting the diagnosis, course of treatment, clinical outcomes, and other facets of care for oncology patients utilizing AccessHope services template and methodologies. Provides documents in compliance with AccessHope standard formats and documentation standards. The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer is a facilitator and change agent, committed to lifelong learning, professional development and embodiment of AccessHope's organizational mission and values. The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer oversees the narrative treatment plan creations that communicate and facilitate member care along the continuum though effective resource coordination, leadership and clinical oversight.

Key Responsibilities include:

Oversees the narrative treatment plan creation for the person with cancer or their loved one who calls the Cancer Support Line (CSL) ensuring quality and effectiveness of the narrative to create an assessment of care and clinical pathway or treatment.

The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer facilitates understanding, addresses and minimizes or eliminates barriers to provide relevant, member centered information which is accessible and meaningful for the caller. The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer ensures the Narrative Writer team is composing narratives that clearly summarize past medical history and current treatment in order to assist the second opinion Physician in determining the correct treatment plan.

The Lead Oncology Narrative Writer:
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the role of registered nurses with evidence to support professional expertise.
  • Assists the Sr. Oncology Narrative Writers with day to day clinical operational decisions as applicable to client/ member care and narratives.
  • Assures staff are current on all licenses, certifications and competencies to provide treatment summaries
  • Facilitates the orientation and ongoing development and education of staff
  • Leads the creation of treatment plan frameworks for Physician approval based on identified symptoms reviewed by utilizing current medical oncology knowledge and industry and COH standards.
  • Partners with internal and external sources to request and gather medical records, lab reports, and other pertinent patient records for review. Ensures the accurate designation of records to the right patient and timelines documented.
  • Oversees the treatment regimen recommendation in sequential order for cancer treatment of individual patients through research and case manages patient files.
  • Evaluates the member's progress toward attainment of identified goals and appropriate modification and communication of the plan of care
  • Enhances professional growth and development by reviewing current literature, attending educational programs, workshops and in-services
  • Support and facilitate clinical critical thinking and judgment of staff
  • Follow up on problems/requests made by staff on an ongoing basis as they relate to the clinical narrative scope.
  • Provide high level expertise recommendations for treatment plans and clinical content of narratives
  • Gain an overview of all member/ client and department clinical needs
  • Manage and prioritize workloads using a standard approach that supports effective and efficient use of resources for appropriate queuing of narratives
  • Oversee coordination of care to ensure corrective actions related to member/ client safety occur and controls coordination of care between disciplines
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and cost containment for the AccessHope team nd makes recommendations for implementation of improvement initiatives
  • Collaborates with teammates in the overall management of the AccessHope on-line library to ensure that information is current and easily accessible to staff.
  • Assists with identification of clinical trends and issues as it relates to any and all factors affecting member treatment.
  • Identifies training gaps and makes recommendations on appropriate clinical training.
  • Documentation
  • Creates and reviews treatment plan framework for Physician approval based on identified symptoms reviewed by utilizing current medical oncology knowledge and industry and AccessHope standards.
  • Partners with internal and external sources to request and gather medical records, lab reports, and other pertinent patient records for review. Ensures the accurate designation of records to the right patient and timelines documented.
  • Effectively uses and applies information technology to give and receive information (e.g. email, basic Microsoft Office applications, Salesforce, LMS (learning management systems) access, information on Share point or other web-based applications).
  • Provides a treatment regimen recommendation in sequential order for cancer treatment of individual patients through research and case manages patient files.
  • Assists Operations Leader in monitoring adherence to legal and administrative protocol with regard to patient confidentiality and industry confidentiality.
  • Follows established NewCo and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Maintains integrity and confidentiality.


Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing is required
  • Seven (7) years or more of experience working as an oncology nurse in a case management capacity or an Employer Services environment. Experience in a leadership or Supervisory role.
  • Relevant knowledge in Oncology, Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, Biotherapy, Clinical Trial or Bone Marrow & Hematopoietic Cell Transplant
  • Must have strong Clinical Acumen
  • Strong understanding of Oncology
  • Ability to work independently
  • High sense of urgency
  • Must have proficient / expert oral and written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to ask probing questions, type and provide telephonic advice simultaneously
  • Must be able to Type proficiently
  • Maintains professional appearance, per dress code policy
  • Demonstrates outward manifestations of AccessHope culture of excellence
  • Basic to intermediate capability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Use of email and other electronic forms of communications is a position requirement.
  • Salesforce and familiarity with voice technology


Required Certification/Licensure:
  • Current NP license


Preferred education experience and skills:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing with a focus in Oncology
  • Nursing care coordination or Case Management Training Course
  • OCN Certification
  • Experience writing medical narratives or as a case manager
