Job Title: Discovery and Access Librarian

Position Summary and Key Responsibilities:

The Discovery and Access Librarian will coordinate the acquisition, implementation, and maintenance of all Library resources, systems, and access services as well as facilitate the City of Hope community's discovery and use of library resources and services. The Discovery and Access Librarian will also provide general information, research support services and other duties needed to ensure the City of Hope's mission.

Primary services and responsibilities:
  • Facilitate integrating information resources into the institutional enterprise-wide systems to support research, clinical care, and other business activities;
  • Serves on appropriate committees and working groups related to integration of our resources, tools and services into other IT and institutional systems;
  • Identifies, acquires, coordinates, implements, and maintains discovery and access services and tools;
  • Oversee the library's interlibrary loan and document delivery operations; and
  • Oversee the cataloging operations.

Collection development and assessment responsibilities:
  • Oversees the licensing and renewal processes for resources as well as coordinates and promotes product trials;
  • Aids in the provision of clinical and research informational services as needed;
  • Identifies resources to support library team education as well as promotes and facilitates their use; and
  • Analyzes and reports usage of resources and tools.

Information services responsibilities:
  • Provides training on library resources; and
  • Provides general reference and research assistance to non-clinical staff and students.

Administration and management includes providing assistance with developing policies and procedures as well as participating in the management of the library.

Communication and teamwork: maintain positive, productive working relationships with library staff, internal and external customers, and vendors; serve on project and other teams effectively.

Continuing education: participate in appropriate continuing education to develop and maintain needed knowledge and skills; keep up with emerging technologies as they relate to library service

Internal Contacts: Library users, researchers, clinicians, ITS staff, other COH staff

External Contacts: Vendors for library materials and library systems, consortial groups

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, includingadherence to theworkplaceCode of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:
  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of related experience in a health or biomedical sciences library. Experience as a health professional may be substituted for library experience.
  • Experience maintaining and integrating digital resources.
  • Experience managing document delivery and interlibrary loan services.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a biomedical or scientific field.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).
  • Experience with interlibrary loan/document delivery operations.
  • Working knowledge of biomedical terminology.
  • Understand the principles of evidence-based practice.
  • Experience using biomedical databases.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse library staff, users, and members of the City of Hope community.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn new technologies.
  • Commitment to high standards of customer service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Database search platforms (required), e.g. PubMed, Ovid.
  • Office suite (required), e.g. Microsoft Office.
  • Web browser (required).
  • High level of expertise with current and emerging technologies related to library service.
  • Mobile computing devices such as smart phones and/or tablets.
  • Photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines.
