The Associate Vice President, Principal Gifts (Senior Director, Principal Gifts) is responsible for managing a dynamic relationship portfolio of approximately 30 of City of Hope’s most financially capable donors and prospective donors, individuals who could make a $2.5M gift or higher. Position serves as both a fundraising professional/calling officer, as well as a relationship connector/builder between various administrative and faculty leaders with these high-capacity donors and prospects. AVP will develop complex relationship-deepening/solicitation and stewardship plans that are customized to each individual prospect. AVP works collaboratively across all functions within the Office of Philanthropy to identify prospective donors, develop qualification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies, and ultimately delivers upon those strategies in a highly effective manner. Individual must possess a sophisticated customer-service orientation; an ability to understand and communicate complex scientific ideas and concepts; and a natural orientation toward problem solving, collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and accountability. AVP will hold ultimate responsibility of ensuring proposals, stewardship reports, and communication materials (electronic and hard version) are created to reflect the highest level of excellence and personalization for the donor. Position represents the Office of Philanthropy internally at various levels and forums with the faculty and administration. AVP will participate with other Office of Philanthropy colleagues in strategy review sessions to ensure the highest level of and an optimally effective donor experience. Additionally, AVP is responsible for remaining current on key funding priorities and initiatives to ensure that philanthropic support is matched to donor interest at an optimal strategic level. AVP must be capable of crafting, reviewing, and delivering highly effective position papers, briefings, talking points, overcoming objections documents, letters, stewardship pieces and proposals. Crafting complex gift agreements and managing negotiations, either personally or through internal and external partners is a key skillset. Position will effectively triage and/or assume donor relationships as deemed appropriate and will support the success of their colleagues toward meeting shared goals for the Office of Philanthropy. AVP will represent City of Hope, the Office of Philanthropy with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity, demonstrating the values of the organization and supporting the overall vision for the philanthropy program.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Personally manages a dynamic prospect/donor portfolio of approximately 30 individual donors and prospects at all times, develops and executes cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans to achieve highest level of philanthropic partnership. Provides support to the CPO, and CEO, colleagues as needed on transformative and principal gift level gift opportunity strategy design and execution.
- Participates in strategy sessions and work collaboratively within the Office of Philanthropy to craft and execute customized approaches for identified donors and prospects.
- Participates in the departmental strategy discussions to optimize the principal gifts portfolio for the entire Office of Philanthropy program, and one consistent with meeting annual and multi-year financial targets.
- Staffs Chief Executive Officer, Chief Philanthropy Officer, Provost/Scientific Officer at meetings, events, activities to ensure optimal donor experience and effective fundraising activity execution.
- Manages staff directly assigned and monitors all Principal Gifts project-related activities to ensure effectiveness and excellence.
- Serves as a representative of City of Hope Office of Philanthropy within City of Hope’s management, as well as externally to professional and industry organizations.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Must have a Bachelor’s Degree
- Must have at least 15 years of related experience with demonstrated success and effectiveness in major and principal gift fundraising, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Master’s Degree in a related field preferred
- Fundraising certification is preferred
- Demonstrated success in soliciting major or principal gifts, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a complex organization.
- High level of collaboration and teamwork involved, leading by example with open communication and transparency.
- Strong, persuasive communication skills, including verbal and written required.
- Ability to work through complex legal and financial documents, and develop philanthropic positioning and messaging.
- Intellectual curiosity for the profession, healthcare and research industry, and philanthropic trends in order to craft a leading practices program.
- High level of customer-service, creativity, initiative, and motivation.
- Team orientation and “shared success” model.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
