Park and Recreation

A District Superintendent job is available with The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. We are seeking a committed professional to manage, supervise, coordinate and provide oversight of the Athletics Division. This includes implementing and managing a comprehensive citywide adult sports program that meets the needs of the Fort Worth and surrounding community either through directly offered programs or the facilitation of programs offered by alternative providers.

The District Superintendent is responsible for providing a long-term vision and plan for the athletic field system, which leads to recommendations for upgrades, renovations and new construction. The selected candidate will plan and oversee all marketing and promotional activities to maximize sports program participation and field rentals. Marketing expertise is needed to identify target audiences and marketing channels for all opportunities including sports tourism.

This position may involve working nights, weekends, and holidays.

The District Superintendent job responsibilities include:

  • Implement and manage a comprehensive citywide adult sports program that meets the needs of the Fort Worth and surrounding community either through directly offered programs or the facilitation of programs offered by alternative providers. Sports programs will include both indoor and outdoor sports based on the assessment of community need and alternative providers. It is the responsibility of the position and assigned staff to have a full comprehension of the adult sports environment. Sports should be offered through a variety of directly programmed opportunities that could include leagues, tournaments, clinics, and drop-in activities. Directly managed sports have included basketball, softball, soccer, and volleyball, and many other sports are facilitated through field rentals including kickball, tennis, rugby, flag football, and more.
  • Manage the Athletics Section- field rentals for (82) Level 1 and Level 2 fields. Rentals include use by alternative providers for both youth and adult sports for league games and practices, tournaments, and other special events. The management of the field rentals includes field monitor management, trash removal, lighting management, and providing exceptional customer service to local, regional and national sports organizations. While field rental activities are for indirect sports programs, the Athletics Division staff assist league presidents and tournament directors with logistics that help facilitate successful programs. Optimal field management includes balancing the needs of directly managed programs and local alternative providers, while providing sports tourism opportunities to participants outside the Fort Worth community.
  • Daily operations and maintenance of the sports fields, directly managed by the Field Operations Supervisor, are under the oversight of the position. Outdoor field maintenance includes an understanding of the best practices for natural grass maintenance; artificial turf maintenance; irrigation and lighting systems; and maintenance equipment and tools. Haws Athletic Center management includes aspects of indoor building maintenance including daily custodial; annual maintenance; gymnasium floor maintenance; and coordination with the Property Management Department for building systems maintenance including HVAC and building envelope.
  • Represent the Athletics Division at all planning and construction meetings regarding athletic field capital projects. To provide a vision and plan, it is necessary for the District Superintendent to understand and stay current with local, regional and national sports field trends.
  • Responsible for the professional development of all Athletics Division staff, with assistance from division supervisors. Professional development will include understanding staff career goals; encouraging and providing development opportunities; as well as providing direct mentorship. Staff development is a key initiative for the City of Fort Worth.
  • Develop, request and implement the annual budgets for the Athletics Division, which includes Haws Athletics Center and Adult Sports; Athletic Maintenance; and McLeland Tennis Center, which cumulatively amount to $2.8 million. Budgets account for all expenditures, including labor costs; supplies and materials; contracted services and other costs, as well as revenues derived from activity fees, ID cards, site reservations, concessions agreements, leases, and other miscellaneous revenue.
  • Negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues, respond to internal and external customer and citizen inquiries. Meets with community groups to discuss field maintenance issues, and resolves customer complaints, serves as staff liaison on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees; prepares and presents administrative, statistical, activity reports and other necessary correspondence. In addition, the position will conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations and operational studies. Recommends modifications to policies and procedures as appropriate. Performs other related duties as required and adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Park and Recreation Administration, Recreation, Recreation, Business Management, Park Management, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in park operation, landscape architectural design of small park capital projects, community recreational programming.
  • Two (2) years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
  • Valid driver's license.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong background in sports management, recreation programming and sports field maintenance is highly desired.
  • Proven experience creating and implementing a strategic vision for a comprehensive sports program that includes strong partnerships and outreach.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint).
